Stayed at The Great House for 3 nights during Senior Open Golf Championship in July. We loved our room in the Coach House. Very comfortable and equipped with every facility one could want for a short stay. The home made biscuits were a particular joy!! Weather was very hot whilst we were there, but coach house accommodation was wonderfully cool - do not know if rooms in the main building were the same. The Manager was away whilst we were there and hotel appeared full, but owners and staff coped admirably - nothing was too much trouble and the young staff were polite, efficient and friendly. The hotel was actually in a more built up location than we were expecting, but there was no problem with traffic noise etc - only slight irritation was the church bells which rang on the quarter hour day and night! Breakfasts were lovely and individually cooked to order. We only ate at the hotel one evening, but meal was wonderful with excellent choice and fresh produce. If we lived locally, we would dine here often, which other locals were obviously doing. It was lovely to be able to eat outside in the large covered but open 'tent' - where we were able to admire the beautifully maintained garden. Work was ongoing whilst we were there to provide more rooms in the coach house area - this caused us no problem whatsover and it is nice to see that the business is obviously doing well enough to proceed with expansion. Very enjoyable few days and if we are ever in Porthcawl area again, would have no hesitation booking The Great House Hotel. For our taste, Porthcawl instantly forgettable - except for the golf course. We loved seeing Fred Couples and his caddie all alone eating fish and chips from a box sitting on a bench overlooking the sea and admiring a Welsh sunset!!
