“Steve the best host”
Reviewed 1 March 2014

Ty Castell came highly recommended by other reviwers, but the reality was it really was that good. Steve Anderson the proprietor met us and showed us the room. It was clean, modern with all the facilities you expect, plenty of tea and coffee. Breakfast was excellent and Steve the most helpful owner I've come across and it was value for money. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the South Wales valleys.

Stayed here last night as on a course in the area. I have to say this is a fantastic value B and B. It's clean, Steve very welcoming. Nice clean room, very quiet. Off road parking, near the centre. Infact I am going to suggest to my manager to recommend this to the contractors who come on the course.

A relatively plain room; place was a little hard to find, but had ample parking. Walked past old church down into town and the castle, with pubs along the way. Breakfast was good. Price was right. Host was very helpful with a minor car problem. Had nice conversations with other guests.

Stayed one night only but would have been happy to stay more. Steve (owner) very welcoming and helpful. Cheap price for a clean, warm and comfortable stay. Really good breakfast. Can't beat this for value for money. Will definitely stay again if in the area.

Unable to find accommodation in Cardiff for the rugby world cup, we chose a B&B in Caerphilly instead. Turned out to be perfect for us - great value accommodation moments from the train station (20mins to Cardiff). Steve couldn't be a more welcoming and accommodating host, serving up a massive breakfast and being really flexible on check in and check out times to suit us. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable, with great wi-fi reception. We had a lovely time and would definitely choose to stay in Caerphilly again for Millennium Stadium events in future when on a budget. Loved the castle, lots of good local pubs and a nice curry house.

I stayed in the first floor twin-bedded room

Pros:
• Only a 10-minute brisk walk to the castle; lots of dining options within easy walking distance
• Bargain tariff
• Friendly reception from Steve
• Tasty breakfast served in a large dining room with lots of sunshine
• Off-street parking
• Spacious lounge room that’s open to guests
• Clean, largish room and clean, large wetroom, but… (see below)

Cons:
• The first floor smells musty, including the bedroom and lounge; the bed sheets were clean but old and smelled musty
• Old, scratchy bath towels (of several different colors), some of which had bleach stains
• A note in the room stated that the B&B was 2-stars, with a bit of work needed to bring it up to 3-star standards; there was a “For Sale” sign in the front yard

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a clean (if musty), inexpensive room with no frills and in a good location, this B&B is for you. Next time, I’d pay more and stay elsewhere.

I need to correct the reference to grading moving from 2* to 3* , when the website and notices actually say 4* to 3*. It is graded 4* (Guest House category) until April 2014. The room referred to has a wet room for regulation disability access, so there is more steam and condensation. 'Musty' is a rather a derogatory term when the climate has been particularly wet too ... and the house is 100 years old. I feel that Agincourt 1415 may well have expected a 4* hotel and was willing to pay more ; when it would have been considerably more. And you wouldn't find a 4* hotel in Caerphilly! Agincourt's friends were located on first floor and I detected a little envy on arrival. I have always maintained it is a no frills B&B , offering good value for money, and in that respect i would say (as with all other reviews) it is above 'average'. Towels could have been changed simply on request; no complaints were received during Agincourt's stay so I am somewhat surprised by this review, which seems somewhat of an after-thought ( 2 months after stay). The 'For Sale ' sign reflects the reality of the situation and economy , but I am still hopeful of staying in business; I do not see how the sign has any impact on a visitor's stay , so I do not see why it is necessary or useful to report in a review.

A cheerful genuine welcome from Steve. This with reliable fast wifi and off road parking have been rare in our travels. Good hot shower, spotless newly decorated and fitted out bathroom. Bed was comfortable and breakfast lovely. This would have to be the best value accommodation in 10 days travel in southern UK. We prefer this uncluttered and unpretentious type accommodation to the fussy often dusty and "quaint" B and B.
