“Lovely food and plenty for your money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

Love the food here especially Sunday lunch! But make sure you book in advance on Sunday as it is always busy! Deserts are very yummy too!

Just passing, popped in for a pint and pie. Quick service, good pint, fantastic food. Spent most if the evening there.

“Great pub meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

I was lucky enough to visit this delightful pub on 01/06/14. In my 34 years in cardifff I was unaware of the existence of this pub. I am aware that the pub has recently changed ownership and this is actually my second visit to the pub since this change. I have found the staff and new owners extremely efficient and helpful. It is clear that the new owners have made a huge effort to revamp the decoration of the venue and the decor looks fresh and airy. The owners have also sourced a fantastic huge photographic print of Caerphilly castle which covers one entire wall of the restaurant. So nice is the new decor that I even approached the staff for details of where they sourced this fantastic wall print and the colour of the new paint! The new owners were kind enough to come and chat to me for a minute to provide this information and talk me through their recent renovation works. The pub has lovely sunny outdoor space and importantly also lovely, safe play area for young children to run around in. This was a god send as I my visit involved a one year old toddler. He delighted at the climbing frame and slide and the pet rabbits in the garden. The owners explained to me that they hope to upgrade this area in the future so I look forward to what changes time may bring. The restaurant menu for both my adult and child dining companions was warmly received. I personally recommend the steak pie. I do not have the opportunity to eat beef very often and this pie was an absolute delight. I was aware that the pie was not on the main menu on a Sunday but had so enjoyed it ion my first visit I asked if they might be able to accommodate my request for a pie. The staff were happy to oblige. My mother was so impressed with the pie she actually said that it was the best she had ever eaten, even trumping my own late Lancashire grandmother's pie. Our order was quickly taken and our drinks and food orders arrived promptly and correctly (which can be difficult when accommodating a large party- we were 6 adults, 2 under 16s and a toddler-on a busy Sunday afternoon). The fact that the restaurant and pub were busy did not seem to impact on the service of the day. The staff were polite and efficient, and whilst checking that we were happy with our meal- they were not intrusively so. The staff were very helpful in heating up my son's homemade baby food meal and making sure that a high chairs was ready for us in arrival. The staff and owners were very child friendly and made the effort to interact with my one year old. Overall our experience at this venue can only be rated as a lovely meal out in Lovely surroundings with good food, good service and a good time had by all diners in our party. Well worth a visit as it is a hidden gem in the countryside. I shall must definitely be returning (as will the other guests in my party) and I will be highly recommending this venue to friends and family for a nice trip out

“Lovely Sunday - food and ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

Second time I have been to this venue since the change of ownership. Huge improvement in the decor and the menus keep getting better. Food was lovely - all 8 of us had a range of food - all served well and tasty. Will certainly be going back again.

“Disappointed !!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014

This is the first time I have eaten at the Black Cock since the changeover and my review is completely out of sync with ALL the recent comments. I went with family for Sunday lunch today and was anticipating another good meal. How wrong could I have been. Two of us had the garlic mushrooms as a starter and it was completely tasteless and seemed devoid of any seasoning. The sauce appeared to have been thickened with corn flour ! I have eaten garlic mushrooms many times over the years and never had anything like that before. The main meal was ok - the meat was tender but again the vegetables weren't seasoned. The dessert was great but I assumed the sticky toffee pudding had been bought in rather than cooked in house. Anyone reading this must think I am just being overly critical but I have never taken the time to write a review before as I don't as a rule like to be negative about someone's business and I generally find something positive. The reason I didn't make a fuss at the time was because I was taking my niece out as a treat and didn't want to embarrass her although I did explain my disappointment when paying the bill at the bar and was told that they would pass it on to the chef. I doubt I will return
