“Hotel??? Seriously ??!! I would describe it more as a staff accommodation dig”
Reviewed 11 June 2013 via mobile

A big disappointment !Staff not present as welcomed to the Algano. We stayed in the coach house that looks to be used for dumping old stuff.
Size of the room where 3x2
Toilette were in a build in wardrobe with not even a shower box or hot water running , what else we could ask for a 85£ a night !!! Mattress were cheap and terribly uncomfortable. Really helped that we could hear the goings on from the room below to the point that we thought they were I'm the same room as us.
I would describe this hotel more as an remote hostel falsely advertised.
I will never come back, worse expirince we ever had,
And this comes from an hotel restaurant manager.
Very imbarassing.

On arrival we expected for there to be sufficient parking as described on the website, we were told to drive around the back of the (hotel) to find a tiny car park mostly occupied by there catering vans and was told to squeeze in between them and the 4 other residents cars.
We said to the receptionist what if we needed to move the car during the night for emergency and her replay was "no one will be moving any cars until the morning".
We then checked in and was told that we will be staying in the coach house which was advised to be one of the nicest rooms in the (hotel) .
First we entered the coach house to find a half complete kitchen which was used as dumping room, the stairs leading up to our room were filthy and looked like they had been laid for years.
The room was open with a chair holding the door open. The room was tiny, just enough space for a bed, not even any bedside tables. The mattress was dirty and the bathroom was ridicules, we found a dirty shower which only ran cold water and so we could not have a shower before our planned evening out! I could go on and on about our experience but I would run out of writing space. This experience nearly wrecked me and my partners night away which was booked and planned since February. The girl then had the cheek to charge us £85 and did not even ask us how our stay was!!! This so called hotel is nothing like what they are advertising on the website!

We booked for a 1 night stay for our first wedding anniversary. The hotel was easy to find and our hopes were high.

The car park is tight, but secure and reasonably easy to use.

Our room was in the coach house, which is used as a hotel dumping ground, with a small downstairs kitchen full of rubbish for customers to view when they walk in.

The room was small but very clean and tidy, the bathroom was tiny. More of a hallway than a room. I decided to have a quick shower before our dinner reservation. No such luck as there was no hot water. I then went back to reception to find someone to fix it. The place was derelict. I shouted and tried to find a bell but to no avail. As we had a dinner reservation we left without having a shower.

On returning there was still no hot water, however with the hotel fully booked i felt sure there would be someone kicking about. Wrong. No staff anywhere in sight!

The next morning i had an early start so left my wife to deal with the cold shower. She went to see the receptionist/cook/cleaner who said that "it was her fault for not getting in contact". I think that says it all about the hotel in general.

All in all a terrible experience.

We booked the Elgano for an overnight stay and glad had chosen just one night.

While not lacking anything as such, what was there was okay. Our cold, double room was small and no room to walk around the hard bed. Heating on timer. Room space was tight. Breakfast was okay. Parking could be tricky at busy times. Card payments incur 5% surcharge.

The location and building itself were extremely pleasant, close to Bute Park, staff were friendly, and shower was good. On return visits will stick with the road but try another B & B instead.

Stayed on a recent Saturday at this small budget hotel in Cathedral Road near to Sophia Gardens. My single room though small had a 4 foot double and was clean and fresh. The staff were friendly, very helpful and the breakfast was cooked to order so no chewy toast and overcooked eggs. The hotel is an easy walk to the city centre.

The hotel is situated on a main road about a half mile from Cardiff Castle and the Millenium Stadium. Access by car is easy from the A48 and motorway via Llandaff, or from the A4232 Cardiff West Services to Cardiff Bay link road via Leckwith and Riverside. (The road from the Culverhouse Cross TV mast gets congested and has several speed cameras).

Pedestrian access is a very pleasant stroll through Sophia Gardens and, (by day), Bute Park. Parking is via the back lane now called Sophia (can't) Walk. Space is limited and via a mews arch, so not suitable for an RV or less than confident driver.

Staff are friendly, and the place is clean and uncluttered. Possibly it could do with a little more homeliness. The room itself was small uncluttered, but mostly clean, and the bed was an exquisitely comfortable memory foam affair on a not very robust base. The en-suite was clean except for some out of the way mould, but was a bit dim with a somewhat over-zealous PIR lighting that could shut off on you. No tumblers, but there were cups and coffee-making facilities and a hair dryer.

The powerful thermostatic shower was a joy and there were good clean towels. While the hotel backs onto the National Sports Centre for Wales, there was no external noise in the night, but thin internal walls could be a problem with boisterous or gymnastic guests.

Several pubs with food are within a very close radius: the Cayo; Mochyn Du; Beverley; Cricketer's, but there's no shortage of choice at all levels of gastronomic sophistication in town.

Full English/Welsh breakfast was well cooked and presented and of reasonable quality in a pleasant, if chilly, conservatory environment. There perhaps could be more choice of cereal/muesli and juice, plus the odd extra cooked item, so average to good. Sunday Breakfast was 9 'til10, so you might want to consider if this impacts on an early start.

Room Tip: Rear rooms will be quieter and get morning sun. Front rooms are likely to get rush-hour traffic. Pro...
