“Pleasant enough but potential for so much more”
Reviewed 10 April 2014

The hotel was satisfactory and overall we had a decent stay. The main positives were friendly staff, clean rooms, excellent pool / gym facilities, choice of two restaurants, free parking and free WIFI. There is also a choice of Starbucks, Victory pub / bar or the restaurant.

There was however potential for improvement in several areas. Although clean, the room was dated and tatty with a very old difficult to use TV. Costing 120 pounds a night I was quite shocked that there wasn't any complimentary toiletries, instead a soap dispenser in a similar fashion to a budget hotel. The Victory bar was reasonably priced and food was good. The restaurant however had a limited menu and the service / quality of food was poor. They couldn't cope with our large party and it took 2 hours for our main course to arrive from ordering and wrong meals arrived. The second night we pre ordered and it still took just as long. Service was poor at breakfast also and it was a hard task to get a knife and fork / coffee. It was difficult to find enough variety on the menu after two nights although there were specials. The location is also quite far from Cardiff.

Overall a decent stay however I wouldn't choose to stay here when not on business. The pool / gym are a bonus but the hotel doesn't quite reach its potential. The upper deck rooms are essentially 20 pounds a night more to get toiletries and a Sky movies package.

Room Tip: Don't bother with upper deck rooms.

Room a good size and OK overall but hotel looks shabby in places. Restaurant menu poor overall v.little real choice. Staff nice but food took ages to arrive. Poor selection of spirits in the bar and wine served was warm. There are a lot of better hotels out there - disappointing to see village hotels like this.

This hotel was much better than some of the reviews suggested. We had a lovely welcome at reception and were given a room on "The Upper Deck", or second floor.
The room was similar to other hotel rooms quite spacious but not big. The bathroom was clean and the towels were nicely washed.
We had a meal on the Friday night and it was pleasant even if it was expensive. It was obviously a popular venue for families with young children.

Room Tip: Go for the second floor, front.

I've stayed here (and at many of their other hotels) several times over the years because of work and used to like this place. Lately, this place seems to get worse each time I stay. The Verve was overpriced but was replaced by Vinny & Vito. Shame I never got to try the latter as it as it was shut tonight, presumably for a private party as there were plenty of people in there. The offhand way in which I was dismissed from there was rather poor. The food in the bar is OK-ish but not the same as a proper meal. Shame on you De Vere. I doubt I'll bother staying at one of your hotels again and will similarly discourage my colleagues from doing so.

It was a weekend advent. Friday night was meet and greet. Saturday am conference and while the conference was on some of the man and women went shopping into Cardiff central. The evening meal was great and the entertainment was very good. You had a good choice of food for breakfast. The room we had was a double and it was very clean and tidy. You also had a large TV with wifi, iron and ironing board. Over all the room was very good. Would go there again.

Room Tip: ask for upper deck

I stayed here 1 night on business this week. Room was one of the nicer ones I have had- clean and spacious. I only used the pool and sauna while staying and I was impressed that they had swimming lanes cordoned off and the facilities where perfectly clean and we'll maintained with friendly staff. I ate in the restaurant - food was good and service was quick and friendly. Breakfast in the morning was fairly limited however and I had to work out where this was myself as receptionist failed to let me know but no probs finding this . I only have a number of grumbles on the hotel- noise! I stayed on first floor and during the night it sounded like shutters being pulled down - this wouldn't normally bother me at all but seemed to go on forever - as I got out of bed to call reception it stopped. Not pleasant after travelling all day being woken by this at all. I like certain things in my room- mainly a manual that gives me the basic details- what time food is served where, gym opening times etc, this wasn't there or at least I couldn't find it! And lastly check out! In a hotel this size which caters for business travel I don't believe there should be a Line of people wanting to check out- bills should be printed and ready to go!! I waited upwards of 10 mins- where people are in a rush this for me is unacceptable - also why charge for credit cards- although clearly stated on website so you can't grumble I believe this is unacceptable when you consider the money that is being spent by the average patron. Overall I would stay here again but ask for a room away from shutters or whatever that noise was

We went for a spa package this weekend.

Spa - the treatment rooms were nicely done. Unfortunately there was only a small space to sit which was always full up. The toilets needed updating and lacked cleanliness which seems to be a comment theme in the hotel! There was no spa area for relaxing or a separate jacuzzi, pool, changing rooms etc. so you ended up walking back and forth and loosing any relaxed feeling you might have. The staff were excellent though and made up for the short falls.

Pool area - busy, dated, dirty and no where to sit. We were booked on a spa day but there is no spa to have a day in. Your expected to use the main pool which is overrun by screaming kids etc. NOT relaxing or a spa day at all! It was more like a normal hotel then popping along for a massage. It is NOT a spa day or experience it just has treatment rooms and a sitting area. Everything was a little dirty and just lacking finish. £10 deposit for a dressing gown which was rough and thin and no slippers so you ended up walking bare foot in dirt to get back and forth through the pool turn styles.

Rooms - they were OK but just dirty not cleaned properly the bathroom needed a desperate up date no toiletries and again just a bit grubby and worn. No hot water for a shower though and their toilets don't seem to ever want to flush anywhere in the hotel!

Restaurant - food was excellent and the service was flawless every-time and seemed to be the only clean area (except the greasy plates)

Staff - FANTASTIC!

Overall - not a spa, they are treatment rooms so felt ripped off by the mis marketing. Place needed a deep clean and facilities in dire need of updating. Fine to stay as a stop off but not for a luxury or spa trip
