This is an established restaurant that is still making a huge effort.
Things are a little different in The Canteen. The restaurant only opens on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening. You will almost certainly need a booking. You need to know where you're going to avoid walking right past the place. The decor is basic and it's not the sort of place that you need to dress up for. The waiting staff are superb, the chef pops out and discusses the menu with you. They are keen for you to enjoy the experience.
The menu changes regularly and focuses on a few freshly prepared dishes. On our visit there were 3 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts. This provided choices for vegetarians, vegans and may eaters and it still took us an age to choose. The wine list is similarly simple with 3 wines: a red, a white and rose wine, supported by a good selection of Welsh bottled beers and spirits. Corkage on your own drinks is very reasonable as are the drinks prices.
The food is amazing. Each dish is crafted with passion. The menu is imaginative, the quality is excellent, the presentation is superb. The flavours and textures will delight you.
As a family of four, each eating 3 courses we spent £100 including with one beer and wine.
If you want to spend lots of money on a posh silver service meal, this is not the place.
For interesting, delicious food and excellent service you will find it hard to beat.
