It was ok. I needed to stay somewhere cheap in Cardiff near Cathedral Road for two weeks as I got an internship there. I was somehow taken aback by the hotel staff even before my arrival when it turned out that I can't check in after 9 PM (which I find absolutely ridiculous) and I had to re-book my train ticket. Generally, the staff was very nice and polite, always smiling and making sure I was ok. I've received a small, en-suite room with a big double bed that took up most of the space. The storage space was enough for one person, but if two people stayed there it could get crowded.
The breakfast was...mediocre. I only ate there once as the company I've worked for provided a much, much better breakfast. The orange juice was the cheapest one possible and the rest of the menu didn't really encourage me to eat there either. Plus the decor of the dining room was horrible and thus made it look like it's not very clean.
The localization of the hotel is a big, big advantage. Only 15-20min walk from the castle (you can walk all the way through the park, which is so nice!). Almost right in front of the hotel there's a bus stop with buses going to the city center every 10-15 min. There is a little shop/post office nearby and a couple of nice and cheap cafes/restaurants. There's also a little patio/sitting area in front of the hotel, which was great.
Yet the hotel/lodge has some cleaning issues. My bed sheets, throughout the whole time I've been there, have not been changed, not even once (although I got new towels every other day which was good). Same goes for hoovering the carpet which got quite dirty by the end of the stay. There was dust absolutely everywhere and all of the 5 (!) mirrors in the tiny room were dirty. The shower curtain was full of black hair sticking to it (I'm blonde). Also, the shower leaked and the sink, after flushing the toilet, was spitting out water vertically through the drain (I kid you not). The whole decor of the hotel didn't help - very chaotic and over the top with the amount of mirrors/pictures/lamps etc. The mugs were dirty and there was only 1 tea bag. The sink was too small to fill the kettle properly with water.
I've got a room on the attic which turned out to be very unfortunate because the roof isolation is terrible there. Therefore, as it was very, very hot for most of the time I stayed there, my room was BOILING HOT and having the window open 24/7 didn't help at all.
I've definitely stayed in better B&Bs/guesthouses than this hotel, and for less money too! But all in all, it's ok and I'd probably stay there again if I had to come to Cardiff for a short, not sightseeing-oriented stay. While walking around the neighborhood, I've noticed that both the lodge and hotel are for sale (around 1 600 000, if anyone's interested), so just make sure they are still there if you're planning to stay with them within the next few months.
