“The Glory is Fading fast.....attention needed on the Spa”
Reviewed 1 August 2011

Hy husband used to be in Cardiff a lot for business around 8-10 years ago so we used to stay here frequently. Having not stayed here for around 8 years I was disappointed with our stay last weekend and do now question its 5 star status.
On arrival the car park was full but they found a space for us at the back (good times).
On entering the lobby it still took my breath away when i looked up, this is a stylish and well designed hotel with a ship theme to it.
We booked on the day via the hotels reservation system so didn't get such a great room with a view (first floor double) but that was okay and was nicely done out.
There was no mini bar there now (bad times) so we had to order up some drinks from the bar, which was fine as I got a nice cocktail.
We had a lovely meal here in the restaurant but they no longer seem to make use of the outside space for meals and drinks (shame that).
The restaurant manager was a lovely guy who gave my husband a very passionate talk on the cheese board (which he thoroughly enjoyed, and also the cheese)!
We decided not to venture into Cardiff and took our selves off to bed around 11.30.
The hotel was very busy with a wedding and a 40th Party going on, which we then found out was below our room and pretty booming so beware if you are allocated a room on the 1st floor above the function rooms, as it was not until 1am when the music went off and we could finally sleep (not great and not told either).
Breakfast was great, nice choice and no complaints and a nice view of the Marina.
Then we ventured off to the Spa (big mistake), having spent lots of blissful times here in the past, when it was a stunning Spa ahead of it's game, it has took it's eye of the ball and started to languish in decay.
There were lots of broken and cracked tiles in and around the Pool area and rust and decay everywhere and it did not feel clean either. It is in desperate need of a reburb, even replacing the loungers would improve the area but it looked like it was being neglected and ignored. I did not opt for a treatment so I cannot comment on those.
Come on St Davids you have the potential to be great again if you spend a bit of cash to regain your crown and please your clients.

Dear guest
Thank you very much for your comments, all of which have been noted and shared with the team.
I can confirm that the Marine Spa pool area is scheduled for refurbishment in October to bring this in line with the rest of the hotel.
I am pleased that on the whole you enjoyed your stay and we can hopefully welcome you back soon.
Yours sincerely

Took a days visit to the spa for the first time - telling them that if we liked it we'd be back.
Arrived at reception to be told "the changing rooms are over there go upstairs at 1130 for your treatments". No tour of the facility, no orientation, no interest on the front desk.

The pool was probably good once, but is now tired. Rusty fittings everywhere, Open hatches hanging down from the roof, Old paintwork, Would be ashamed if my own bathroom was in this state. Water cooler dispenses only warm water, View of bay obscured by screening, Stylish design of the pool and sauna would be great if everything worked, but it didn't.

Therapies were OK - but in a hotel of this reputation they should be outstanding.

Overall, this is a hotel leisure suite such as you would find in any 4 star hotel with a pool and therapies. Not a destination spa at all. This disappointing as that was what we were expecting from the hype about this hotel.

If you are looking for luxury accommodation...do not book this hotel!!! The position of this hotel within the bay is quite possibly the only positive, everything else is a huge disappointment.
The exterior of this hotel does not have the most appealing attraction and inside does not offer any better presentation with very plain, clinical decoration and absolutely no luxury!
The reception staff were quite frankly rude, unfriendly and uninterested and very unhelpful. Our room was in a desperate need for re-vamp...we had unfinished wall tiles, cracked floor tiles in the en-suite, the 'leather' covered desk was badly ripped, the curtains were not all hooked up to the rail and allowed the heavy curtain to fold over and not close properly. The door to the balcony does not stay open so it is impossible to allow a breeze or fresh air run through the room.
My husband was on business and so we booked this hotel for convenience to the bay and the spa facilities (mainly swimming pool for our daughter), however the use of the spa was limited to just 3 hours of the day!
Hotel's car park was a joke, if you wish to leave the hotel and return you need a code which the reception staff hadn't told us and do not expect to get parked back in the same car park, most of the time you have to pay in the adjacent NCP!
Breakfast was fair, leftover potatoes from the night before and cold, stiff toast delivered to your table by the waiters/waitresses (the cold toast was a complaint by a lot of the other guests).
This hotel in my view is in need of a major renovation and is not worthy of it's 5* rating, we were glad to check out after 2 nights and go home!

Room Tip: Not for families, do not book if you are looking for luxury!

Spa entrance - basic and off car park - 1st impression -
No show round of spa and facilities just directed, no evidence of being ready for us.
Went to pool facilities first. Warm water cooler, rusty pool beds (not able to adjust re height/back etc) only 8 beds.
Roof and tiles marked and in need to repair in places.
Very tired and not in good repair - certainly not 4/5 star -
View of sea not possible re ramp outside and jacuzzi pool situation high walled
Very small pool considering location and rating situation and space not conducive to being there for a pamper day.
Juice bar upstairs self service machine. No reception or "meeter and greeter" in small therapy space.
Again facilities dated and not as clean as should be re maintenance/upkeep.
Amazed at recent Times 50 best spas and Trip rating and hv experience of many spas around the world. (Copy to Times as their rating out of date) Left before having £20! buffet/person as had low expectations and no desire to stay.

Check in was quick, friendly and efficient as was checking out after a three night stay following a good rate from Late rooms. Didn't use the Spa or pool facilities. Room was roomy and quiet with a view towards the Quay. A short walk to the Millenium Centre and it took 40 minutes to walk along the Taff trail alonside the River Taff to the Stadium and Castle area.

Breakfast was full of choice, hot and cold and the staff very attentive and pleasant. I cannot compare this hotle with other 5 star one's as this is the first I've stayed in. Chosen because of it's location and room rate found on the web. Didnot try room service.

One point worth mentioning is the car park outside. £8 for 24 hours in the hotel section but just a matter of yards away (same distance to the hotel) it's £5. Over three nights that's a saving of £9 which is a couple or so more drinks!

Overall, all the staff were friendly, polite and efficient. I would certainly consider staying here again.

In need to substantial refurbishment throughout, so first impression was a disappointment, which continued when we saw the room. It was small, and shabby, and decidedly unglamorous, though the view (from our 'executive' room) was great. With some honorable exceptions, the staff were unhelpful and had forgotten how to smile. Unacceptably long queue at check-out. Overall impression: 3 Star quality and service , but at 5 Star prices. Stay there again? No.

Room Tip: If you must stay there, make sure your room has a view out over the sea, not inwards over the quay.

Poor service, pool area dated with paint peeling and rust appearing around pool area. From a 5* Hotel you would expect 5* service you will not receive this treatment. No steam area within the spa, just a sauna which is very narrow and fits at most 6 people comfortably. The jacuzzi is about the best aspect of the spa.
Lunch was a huge disappointment - hardly any selection and most dishes were empty. The spa changing facilities are very basic, lacking the facilities you would expect from a 5* Hotel.
I would advise that if you wish to visit a 5* Hotel in Wales, that you stay at the Celtic Manor Resort. You will feel pampered, welcome and truly experience 5* treatment!! This Hotel could do with learning from them

Room Tip: Do not stay at this hotel
