“needs that little bit more”
Reviewed 19 December 2011

We stayed at the Hilton as my girlfriend and I had tickets to see a Oliver in Cardiff bay. The night was seen by many as black Friday and therefore the hotel and Cardiff itself was very busy with Christmas work do's. This may have had an impact on some things at the hotel.

Checking in and the valet parking made this simply however can be a little un-nerving handing your keys to your car over and seeing it disappear somewhere not to be seen until you checkout. also means that you have to wait around for your keys and I am not sure how you would go about getting anything out that you may have left in the car these things were not explained.

The room was a King Executive Room and was large with a very comfortable huge bed. large bathroom with walk in shower and also a bath. I did notice the carpets could probably have had a better clean and there were a few scuff marks about and a sealed crack in the shower basin. However all in all not to bad, simply you expect more when you are in one of the more expensive rooms.

Access to the executive lounge was available. nice view I must say that the breakfast was just right. It was a buffet breakfast with all the cereals Coffey tea orange juice toast croissants ect. Also bacon and scrambled egg . couldn't fault it.

having watched the show we returned to a hotel bar. I did have to wait quite a while to be served as the staff were over stretched and I could clearly see two managers stood have a good old chat while people were waiting and a glass was broken on the floor, bar staff simply to busy to clean it up.

the hotel has only 3 lifts two at the front and one tucked away, this was a problem as you would have to wait 2 or 3 minutes for a lift. I could not understand how a purpose built hotel that was built only some 13 years ago only had three lifts ?

the hotel fitness suit was good and the swimming pool was very nice 20 meters so you could do good lengths a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

overall the stay was good and relaxing. If comparing it to hotels abroad of a similar rating it needed refreshing however all in all a relaxing stay. staff were friendly and helpful.

I would say you don't get much more to staying a some slightly less expensive hotels in the area the executive lounge is about all the extra you get if you pay for it.

Stayed at the Hilton to take our disabled daughter christmas shopping in November. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Rooms ideal in size and accessability, well adapted for disabled use. Comfortable and clean, breakfast excellent could fault hotel or staff. We will definately return.

We stayed at the hotel for a second time within about 3 weeks. After our first visit, I wrote to the hotel complaining about the temperature of the swimming pool. The reply offered us an upgrade to address some of our concerns but carefully sidestepped the issue of the pool temperature. What is the point of having a swimming pool if it is too cold to get into? The pool is not a competitive swimming location, it is meant for leisure, it was largely unused during both our stays, one can but wonder why. We have stayed in many hotels in the UK and the pool was by far the coldest we have encountered. As we select a hotel largely on the basis of it having a pool, it is incredibly infuriating when said pool is unusable. It was 27.7 degrees celsius on our last visit, the minimum it needs to be is 30 degrees.

Room Tip: ask for a view of the Castle

The hotel is situated next to the castle on Cardiff. The room we had was on the opposite side to the castle but it was quite and we had a good nights sleep. Good sized room even though we were in the cheapest ones. This was a nice hotel and the breakfast was and extra £12.50 but was buffet style with a good choice. Bathroom was not as clean as it could be around the shower cubicle.

We treated ourselves to a luxury break and used Avios vouchers to stay room only at the Hilton, Cardiff. We selected the hotel due to its 5 star basis, its location to the city centre, valet car parking and leisure facilites. We usually pick B&B's but as it was both our birthdays and we were using Avios vouchers, we pushed the boat out.
We almost did not choose the hotel as we thought it may be too 'posh' but we found the whole experience very friendly and comfortable. The valet parking at £19 per 24hrs was well worth it. We arrived in Cardiff early and were allowed to book in as our room was ready at 12 noon (rather than 3pm) which was a real bonus.
The room on the third floor was compact. We did not have a view as such and we were not aware of a themostat in the room (the windows did not open). The bathroom was lovely and large (almost bigger than the room). Our only negative comments were the fact the carpet had not been hoovered and was visually dirty, all the brochures and information leaflets in the room were tatty and worn and the frugal supply of tea bags (only two).
The leisure facilities were great and very clean and well managed. I did feel the hotel was more of a 4 star standard.

Recently renovated, the hotel is superb, and more importantly, its friendly staff is keen to offer exceptional service. Rooms are spacious, very comfortable, although stuffy, fresh air would have been a bonus. The hotel's location is perfect for sightseeing, with the Castle just opposite its entrance. Perhaps I would add a negative comment about the Health Suite, which was in my view too basic for such a hotel. The showers in the women's in particular reminded me of my old school gym, there was little natural light in the pool/relaxation area, the facilities all appeared too articifial. Sauna nad Steam were however very satisfactory I must admit. A suggestion would be to offer water or tea, as most of us on the go do not always carry our water bottle with us. But we had not chosen the hotel for its spa, so its state did not awfully matter. We unknowingly chose a busy weekend, that of the rugby game, Wales vs Aus, and so the hotel was extremely busy - yet that was not a problem, hotel staff still offered impecable service (valet service, luggage collection); what was an issue though was a gala party in one of the ballrooms, guests were very loud, and the design of the hotel (mezzanines) meant that noise would travel up the floors. Management should bear that in mind when renting the space out.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms facing the inner mezzanine.

Our room was nice, but our friends not so good.
Noise from down the street where all the nightclubs are, was a bit of a pain!
Steam bar, and restaurant, were good.
Only two lifts!!! And one of those broke on Sunday, leading to a long wait for a lift!!

Room Tip: High floor, to get away from outside noise!
