“Very pleasant stay”
Reviewed 9 September 2008

My wife and I stayed for a Saturday night. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room well presented and clean and the breakfast very nice. This hotel is ideally located for the city centre (10 minute walk through the park) and within a very pleasant part of the city. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would certainly stay here again.

A wonderful hotel in a most convenient part of the City away from the hustle and bustle in a converted Victorian property carrying all the same charm and character of the era!

We had a four poster room - and can only describe it as fantastic!

Great breakfast. Helpful staff. Secure parking - but most of all quiet and peaceful!!

Terrificaly helpful when seeking local restaurants and knowledgeable of the local bistro's and eateries. Staff could not do enough to assist us - our only complaint is that we could only stay 1 night due to other committments as we could have stayed for much longer!!!!

We will be returning in the future.......we just hope that anyone reading this is not trying to book at the same time as us and we cannot get in!!!!!!!!

  • Liked — Unerstanding staff who are not overbearing but on the whole genuinely helpful
  • Disliked — Having to leave!

Have just returned from an overnight stay at the Lincoln - first time at the hotel, although we stay in Cardiff fairly frequently (our Daughter attends the Uni); I suspect we are unlikely to stay any where else when we visit the city in the future.

The hotel is a grand Victorian villa, located in a lovely part of the city; a quiet tree-lined road, yet within an easy walk of the castle and city centre. The decor and furnishings are of a very good standard, but sympathetic to the atmosphere of a hotel from this era (the lounge is absolutely charming).

We had a four-poster room (a late booking, so the only double left). The bed was extremely comfortable, and the room a very good size with a seating area set in a large bay window. All the required amenities are provided - tea and coffee, large flat-screen TV etc. The en-suite shower room was a little "compact", but modern, clean and functional.

The service provided was attentive, yet informal and friendly (including a midnight request of the night porter to open the secure parking to the rear of the hotel, so we could run our daughter back to her digs). The breakfast menu caters for all tastes, ranging from a "full Welsh" to smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. Nicely prepared, and swiftly served.

All in all, we thought the Lincoln was something of a "find" and will certainly return. You can pay marginally less, and stay in a bland modern corporate hotel; but it is unlikely to have either the character or location. It may not suit those who like to "throw food up the wall" - but we thought it was a gem.

  • Liked — Character, decor, location and service
  • Disliked — Little to dislike - size of bathroom probably.

This hotel made me realise how difficult it must be, as a hotelier, to satisfy your customers when they all bring their own subjective opinions to your establishment. We walked into our nice, clean bedroom, which actually looked like it had been recently re-decorated, and gave a little 'oh' of disappointment. Perhaps the elegant and obviously expensive wallpaper on the stairs hinted at a sophistication that wasn't apparent in the room itself. Perhaps it was the website which hinted at a country house-type of hotel experience in the city, when the reality was simply old fashioned (and I don't mean that in a good way). The furniture in the bedroom and in the dining room reminded me of the dark wood reproduction stuff at my Grans.

The double room was nice and good-sized. The bed was comfortable and the room had a couple of chairs, small table and a pull-out desk (looked very useful for business travellers) - but the wardrobe was minute and that would have been a problem if we'd have been there for more than a weekend. The bedlinen must have been put away damp because there was a very obvious patch of mildew on the bottom sheet as well as on one of the pillows - the person making up the bed must have seen it and yet put the sheet on anyway.

The ensuite was quite small and not well laid out. The water changed temperature up to 5 times during a shower all by itself, from just bearably cold to just bearbly hot.

The room key does not fit any outside door so we had to ring to be let in at the front or back (from the small carpark) and we were meant to hand the key in when we went out. We didn't realise this and took our key with us. When we rang to be let back in at midnight the gentleman on the 24hr reception desk was just letting guests in from the back at the time so we had to wait, and then were greeted with a distinct air of "And what time do you call this then?" as he said "Your key wasn't there, I thought everyone was in, I wasn't expecting to have to let anyone else in. You'll need to hand your key in tomorrow!". I don't call midnight late and for professionals in our mid-40s, this unfriendly attitude and being 'told off' loudly in front of a group of strangers as we were half-way up the stairs didn't go down too well.

The breakfasts were very good and the rest of the staff were very friendly. The front lounge was nice. But I don't think our room and the overall experience justified the price tag, which seemed to be at the higher end of B&Bs on Catherdral Road.

  • Liked — The front lounge
  • Disliked — Surly night reception staff, erratic shower temperature and mildewed sheets.

This is an excellent small hotel in a prosperous, mainly residential, area of Cardiff but with only a pleasant 15 minute walk to the city centre through the nearby Sophia Gardens (cricket fans please note for 2009!) and along the river.

Staff are charming. The rooms are elegantly furnished - as indeed is the entire hotel. We chose a room with a four-poster bed: looked good, but not the most comfortable I've experienced! The room was spacious, but the bathroom much less so and a trifle disappointing. In a building with character such as this, on tends to forgive things like creaky floorboards!

Breakfast was mouthwatering. The lack of an evening restaurant is not crucial - there is plenty of choice nearby.

Parking is available, though manoeuvring in the car park can be a little difficult when it is fairly full.

Excellent value and, I'm sure, the best of its kind in Cardiff.

  • Disliked — Bathroom, shower

We have just returned from our second visit to the Lincoln House Hotel staying in the suite on the very top floor of the hotel. Both ourselves and our guests are very impressed with the beautiful, furnishings and excellent finish in all areas of the suite. The suite has everything, beautiful fitted kitchen, comfortable and luxurious lounge and dining area together with two excellent bedrooms and very smart bathroom. We have no hesitation in recommending this accomodation.
