Booked here because a friend had booked this hotel already - must admit it is not a venue I use frequently in Cardiff. She booked with a website, I booked with Marriott and I paid quite a bit more so I guess the message is shop around! Check in was slick, professional (noted individual was a trainee!) friendly & helpful. The hotel was nice & clean throughout and in good order. The room was really good, spacious enough, the one negative was it was so warm and I guess some responsibility rests with me as I did not check any of the air con/heating settings and after a day of eating/drinking last thing I thought of! Bathroom well stocked with complementary toiletries, in good order so no real issue within the room.

We decided to have a drink in the bar in the afternoon and it was packed to the gunnels with some sort of party (not residents), it was difficult to get a drink, the few staff on duty were working hard to try and get to everyone. We were surrounded by 'suits' who must have been on their office party and quite frankly the language and behaviour was unacceptable. As it was so busy we decided to eat in the city and found Bill's just across the way and had an excellent dinner there. Unfortunately on returning to the hotel for a nightcap there was yet another function on, and the bar was packed - if anything the behaviours & language was more acceptable! The bar staff apologised for the situation realising that we were residents which was a welcome gesture.

Breakfast next day was really good and we didn't wait being seated very quickly - there was a fair range of food commensurate with English breakfast (no black pudding/fried bread but the American Hash Brown on offer). Check out was a little slow with just 2 personnel on duty and one tied up on the phone with a caller. When I was asked about my stay I did share my discontent with the bar situation only to receive a 'sorry' but I am really perplexed as to how a hotel can host functions and not consider the effect on residents? Surely there is a case for a residents service area at a bar and payment via room card if the hotel cannot accommodate a resident's only bar???? The experience certainly tarnished my experience, and I would be mindful of this if considering the Marriott again. This has impacted on the service perception below, through no fault of the staff delivering service, but of those planning events, parties etc.

Room Tip: Had a room on a wing noted some rooms to be on where the lifts are, this is probably quite busy/noisy

I stayed in the Marriott in Cardiff city centre for two nights in September 2013. The location is very central, near the main shopping area and Cardiff Central railway station.

Unfortunately, the hotel is opposite some bars that open very late (well after normal licensing hours finish at 11pm) and my room, on the third floor at the front, was very noisy. There are rooms which face the other way, and those are probably quieter.

In my view, the Marriott should improve the double-glazing or stop selling these rooms, at least without a clear warning about the noise --the noise kept me awake for hours on both nights of my stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room at the back of the hotel, and refuse to accept a room at the front -- you won't be able to sleep!

Loved everything about the hotel and Cardiff! The location provided access to great nightlife and landmarks such as Cardiff castle. The rooms were big enough and beds were very comfortable!A big bonus for me was the bathroom which was very spacious and modern.

I attended a function in one of the suites at the hotel. With a large number of people present as one would expect it was a fixed menu. In this instance the starter was a tomato and basil soup which was a pleasant but a little traditional. The Christmas main course was well presented with turkey and the trimmings. Although there was little chance the guests would over eat it was well cooked. The dessert was a chocolate and orange torte, very tasty and very sweet. The addition of mince pies with the coffee was very welcome.

Stayed for business here on a Monday night, have to say it was very good hotel. Service was good, and staff very friendly and helpful. Room was spacious, clean and tidy and the food very good indeed if not a little pricey but you expect that from a hotel. Very centrally located for the city centre and railway station. Would recommend.
