Myself and a collegue were booked in for 3 nights as we were working at the international pool in Cardiff. Booking prices was simPle but confusing as we were part of a group that had a set deal but we had to book individually. Despite having a specific link this didn't work and even after speaking with reservations and the receptionist we were unable to cler why 3 nights which should have been £180 ended up costion us £279!!!

The hotel itself was pleasant but we were concerned to return saturday evening to find out room doors locked open!!! According to reception this would have been the cleaners fault and that's the only explanation we got. The door was left clearly ajar for all passing to see and as there was a wedding in the hotel anyone could have wandered in! Another member of our group had the same problem. Luckily we had taken all our expensive equipment to the pool during the day. As with the problem with the room rate the staff didn't seem overly concerned!!

This hotel is on the Western edge of Cardiff and is very convenient for those who want to break a long trip to West. Wales or the ports to Ireland.

The decor is late 1980s but this is more than compensated for by the friendly and helpful staff on reception and at breakfast.

This hotel is very good value with large well provisioned rooms and a good breakfast. Well done Copthornrre Cardiff - professional staff who actually seem to like having guests?

We stayed at the Copthorne for a wedding recently and were really impressed with the venue from start to finish. The room was a good size, clean with the usual facilities you'd expect in the UK (tea/coffee, flat screen TV, nicely furnished, well fitted bathroom, trouser press etc) and the buffet breakfast was delicious (help yourself to a traditional fried breakfast, fruits, pastries, cereals, tea, coffee, juice etc). Our room was situated on the ground floor in the outer block meaning a bit of a trek to the room. This was made worse by the fact that we had a baby with us in a pram. The route to our room meant a lift down one floor, up a small flight of steps, opening a security controlled door with a room pass, down another small flight of stairs and into the room block - hardly ideal with a sleeping baby!
Other than room access though (I dare say they'd have moved us if we'd have asked) the hotel is lovely. The staff are tremendous and the wedding facilities and co-ordination is idyllic. Looking out onto the lake while having your food is paradise like and the classic building furnishing really does emphasise the quality and value for money this hotel has to offer.

All in all I'd highly recommend the Copthorne over other Cardiff based hotels such as St. David's who offer much less character and service for double the price!

Room Tip: If you have a pram or wheelchair, request a room in the main block

If you like hotels just off the motorway and out of the way, < there are shops near by > this is for you, a very nice hotel very large and well kept rooms, food at the bar was ok a bit expensive but the breakfast was very good, i paid £49 inc breakfast on lastminute.com which was a good deal, i must admit i much prefer a hotel in the middle of a city where i have a choice of places to eat, you either eat here or at a nearby pizzahut not my cup of tea, but it is very near motorway connections. One bad point had a very tired lumpy bed.

Room Tip: if you have time visit museum of Welsh life up the road, it is free and well worth going to.

I stayed at the hotel for one night to meet up with friends. My main criticisms are that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning. It was a warm night and I was put in a room over the main entrance which during the late evening was quite noisy causing me to close the window. I then woke up at about 2am very hot. The other thing is and this is not the hotel's fault as all commercial premises have to comply with it - but I had the energy saving lighting in the rooms - not only is it dull but it makes you look awful. So whereas I used to love going to hotels and find the experience made me feel better, now with the horrible lighting it doesn't. The EU have a lot to answer for!

Room Tip: Probably better to ask for one looking over the lake or at least not by the main entrance.
