Spent a night at the Copthorne on business.

Staying at this hotel was like a return to the 1980s. No, literally. The hotel does not appear to have been upgraded for about 30 years.

It is located on a business park a few miles to the west of Cardiff. For business travellers, this is convenient, and there is also the bonus of a large car park outside the hotel.

My check-in the was poor. I had booked a club room, but the receptionist did not appear to know what this meant. In fact, it does not mean that you have the benefit of a club lounge, is usually the case, but that you are provided with a complimentary breakfast and two free drinks at the bar. The gentleman who attended to me did not appear to know this, and had to be persuaded to hand over the drinks vouchers and amend the booking record.

The room was intensely depressing. Back in the 1980s, it was probably up-to-date and cutting edge. However, the dark wood furniture was gloomy. The gloom was accentuated by the drab, marbled wallpaper. There was no air conditioning. The room was consequently hot and stuffy all night. The bathroom was also in need of a full refurb.

Breakfast the following morning was rather poor. The bacon and eggs were greasy and the coffee was of very low quality.

I cannot possibly recommend this hotel. It is not so much tired as exhausted. The owners need to spend many millions of pounds on it as quickly as possible. Until they do, and bring it up to modern standards, I can only advise travellers to avoid it.

Room Tip: I would recommend travellers avoid it altogether.

Nice enough hotel but not really a four star experience. Just a little more attention to detail would make things so much better. Good location, nice room if a little dark and dated but beware the following through-backs to the 70s:

Staff: generally not interested in much other than processing bills, very corporate and unfriendly.

Price: this is not worth £150 for a double room

Food: Uninspiring and dated bar food, very expensive restaurant

Breakfast: apart from having the only member of staff with a smile, the breakfast was simply awful, plastic egg and cold pastries

Smell: for some reason the spa area smelt as if there had been a flood

Room Tip: Chose rooms not facing the crapark

We asked for a ground floor room for us and our elderly dogs which we got. The check in lady was wonderful and helpful as were all the staff. We did not eat in except for breakfast which was first class. An enjoyable stay.

Both the hotel itself and the staff we came across were very pleasant, and our room was fairly large and overlooked the lake. The room was let down by having very dirty windows, due to a house martin's nest under the eaves of an adjacent window.
We had booked a two night package which included dinner on the first night (a £25 allowance off the a la carte menu). The food was good, with adequate portions although the choice of beer was limited.
Breakfast was self-service and there was plenty of choice.
Cardiff city was just a few minutes drive away

Room Tip: The lake views are lovely.
