Awful!

Two dozen strangers in the corner of a restaurant does not make a Christmas party - absolutely no atmosphere. According to the General Manager "we were confident that hotel residents dining would inflate our confirmed booking" - in other words, he was hoping that other hotel guests that hadn't paid for a Christmas Party would wander in and make up the numbers - ridiculous!

The food tasted like a Tesco Value meal straight from the microwave and the wine was over-priced at £8.50 per glass.

We paid for a Superior Lake-View room which was very shabby and the furniture was worn and threadbare. We couldn’t enjoy the lake view as we closed the curtains to hide months of bird droppings caked on the window.

This is not our first visit to this hotel but it’ll be our last. The condition of the hotel and the quality of the events has continually deteriorated during the past few years.

Feedback is ignored so don’t waste your breath.

Background: The Copthorne Hotel Cardiff-Caerdydd is part of the Millennium, Copthorne, and Kingsgate hotel chains, operated by Millennium & Copthorne Hotels Plc, a leading London-based company operating over 120 hotels in about 19 countries around the world. It is a 4-star hotel, situated off the A4050 road near the roundabout in the town of Culverhouse Cross, a western suburb of Cardiff, capital of Wales. Our tour group spent an overnight here, while winding down the homestretch of a 10-day circle tour of UK and Ireland.

PROS: It is situated along a beautiful lakeside setting, which contributes to its relaxing atmosphere. The rooms and common areas are elegant and reasonably sized. There's your usual perks: TV, in-suite coffee/tea, even an ironing board. Other amenities include an in-house restaurant/bar, indoor swimming pool, steam baths, sauna, whirlpool, gym and free on-site parking.

CONS: A few come to mind -- Located on the outskirts of the Cardiff city centre, it takes some effort and planning to reach the city and other POIs. Though elegantly furnished, the in-house restaurant is too small to accommodate large groups, what being popular among tour groups. (We were waitlisted for a table for half an hour for dinner.) A somewhat inefficient waitering system because when our food orders arrived, the poor waitress had no clue whose it is for. The bar was nice, although the drinks are a tad on the expensive side. Lastly, WiFi is not free. One is charged 6 Euros per hour for internet access.

Verdict: The hotel is more than adequate as a base for exploring the surrounding Cardiff area. If you're going to splurge, do it here. Recommended. Grade A-minus.

Set on the main link road to both the City and the Bay this hotel is on the outskirts of the city but doesn't feel like it. The staff were friendly and gave us advice on accessing the city and places to eat and visit. We stayed for two nights and ate in the hotel on the first night only. The food was a fair price for this level of hotel and was well presented as well as tasty. The second night we ate in the city centre at the Red Hot Buffet and this was a fair price for this type of restaurant. The hotel itself was busy with both tourists and business users. My partners only complaint was the bedroom doors do slam on closing so they can be heard early in the morning. We didn't eat breakfast so cannot comment on that but the bar menu food looked appetising when eaten by other guests. To be honest I picked here for our base because it has on site free parking and there was plenty of spaces. I would stay here again and would recommend it.

I have used this Hotel several times now when working in the Cardiff area. Thew staff are always pleasant and helpful with consistent quality for food and service. The rooms can be warm but are very comfortable and quite. Hotel Gym is well equipped.
