We stayed at the Angel several times years ago when our son was at university in Cardiff. I've also stayed there with work - but recently it's not been on the 'preferred' list. We saw a deal and booked two nights paying an upgrade for a "premium room".

We arrived and parked - we checked in and weren't offered any help with luggage. When we got to our room the first thing I noticed was just how small it was - not what I had previously known in their "premium" rooms however there were two dressing gowns - you couldn't actually get to the bed with them hanging but they were there. In addition there was a view of the castle, given the choice we would have preferred more room but I suppose it qualified.

We went to make a drink, and discovered there was no milk, one camomile tea bag and two sachets of decaffeinated coffee. After a route march back to reception we were given profuse apologies and stocks. Onto the bathroom where there was one hand towel and a bathmat. We found the rest of the towels in the wardrobe (no flannels though). There were also hairs in the bath, short hairs like someone had recently had a haircut and they hadn't all been picked up on cleaning.

In the room there were two mismatched bedside lights, a ripped headboard, a standard light that didn't work and a wall light with rather alarming scorch marks on the mounting and wall above it.

All in all it gave the impression that housekeeping had forgotten to finish the room and it certainly hadn't been checked before we arrived.

Because of the distance from reception there was no WIFI ... despite it supposedly being available in all rooms. Reception agreed that it didn't work in our room.

On to our evening meal (included in the cost) we both ordered rare steak one without salad. We both received medium to well done steak with salad and undercooked chips. The 'freshly baked rolls' were stone cold and stale. The salad was a handful of watercress with no dressing. We had asked for peppercorn sauce rather than the teaspoon of Diane sauce we received, Chef apparently couldn't managed that - despite there only being two couples in the dining room and the interminable delay waiting for it to be prepared.

Like others we discovered that the room was hot with the windows closed and too noisy with them open but there was air con ... apart from the fact that when we gave up on it because of the noise the room temperature immediately fell so presumably that isn't working either.

Breakfast was from the buffet and was tepid at best.

We decided not to stay the second night and checked out early the next morning. Reception didn't seem that bothered, we had prepaid for two nights - including afternoon tea but no mention was made of a refund and to be honest we couldn't be bothered to argue.

All in all this isn't 4* maybe 3* and has definitely deteriorated since we were last there. Maybe it's because we were on a reduced price deal that we didn't get a 'better' room and that our experience was so poor. If so they should be ashamed - if you offer a deal you offer a reduced price for the same service you don't reduce the level of service you offer your customers.

Room Tip: Go for a higher floor and accept that if you have a castle view it will be noisy.

Having had a very unimpressive stay previously at the hotel we were invited the try the hotel again and it was like staying in a different hotel. Our room was clean and well furnished and the staff were excellent, friendly and efficient when they were very busy with Xmas parties going on.
Parts of the hotel are in need of refurbishment but this is being undertaken as was proven by the vast difference in our room this time to last.
The location of the hotel is perfect for a stay in the city.
We would now stay at the hotel again although I would check when booking that we had a refurbished room.

My husband and I stayed here as we were having a work night out at the nearby Revolution. It's a beautiful hotel, especially with the Christmas decorations and we received a lovely welcome.

As we booked early, we had an extremely good deal on the bed and breakfast and had a beautiful room which was very spacious. Due to the location we were easily able to stroll to all the shops in Cardiff before getting ready to go out.

There was lots of choice at breakfast and all the food was tasty and fresh. In addition the staff were very friendly and constantly topping up the food when it run out.

We only live 20 miles from Cardiff so don't usually stop down there, but would definitely stay there again for a work night out.

We stayed one night at the Angel, via a travelzoo deal (£99 bed, evening meal with a bottle of house wine, and breakfast). The hotel was not at all as some describe (old, dated) - it was modern, warm, with a well appointed bedroom, Excellent restaurant experience, particularly the superb breakfast. Parking on-site was £10 (first come, first served). All the staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a super location, just opposite the castle and very central for all places of interest .All in all it was a great, and great value, experience.

This is one of the best hotels in Cardiff. Reception was excellent. Arrived early and this was not a problem, room was ready. Room was clean and modern. All staff including house keeping were friendly. Would onlyuse this hotel on my next trip to Wales.
