“Drab”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2014

We stayed at this hotel, for Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and was really looking forward to this.We stayed in room 130 and it was very drab and dirty, didnt notice on first look as got changed quick to go out, only notice that the bed was against the wall so this meant me shimmying down the bed to get out. But the following day noticed the cracked tiles on bathroom floor the dirt along bath panel and behind door and toilet, shower curtain looked clean but could not get anoher crease in it same as main window nets. The curtains had holes in them, the radiator panels had dust all over them. Hot drink facilities were dated and grubby. Even the room numbers outside were only blue tacked on, also the lights kept flickering. Would have complained on leaving but was very busy when checking out, so have informed others this way to be wary when booking here. Would not reccommend to others unless seriously refurbished. Have also taken photos incase this company try to deny these facts, but have not uploaded them. Also very noisey with traffic.

Thank you for taking the time to highlight your concerns.

I have taken all your comments most seriously as it is never our intention for guests to leave unhappy.

We have recently started an internal refurbishment programme to ensure improvements are madw where necessary, needless to say certain bedrooms have been hihglighted as a priority.

The Angel is a very convenient hotel a few minutes away from everything in Cardiff. A friendly welcome put a spring in the step. My room was pleasant and although overlooking he main road the noise was not intrusive - maybe because i was on the upper floors and i sleep soundly!. The bar staff were very friendly and the evening food good.
For me the slight disappointments were two grotty pillow thin and curled - they should have been replaced and breakfast. They ran out of bread for 25 minutes and all there was available was unimpressive sliced white bread.. The staff were helpful and willing and my poached eggs were perfect- just oh dear the lack of bread!
Yes i would go back as you are made to feel welcome and yes the shower in my bedroom was outstanding and did not spray the floor.

Room Tip: higher floors are quiter

My wife and i have recently stayed at the Angel for a 3 day 2 night break. The Angel is ideally situated to explore a vibrant city. The Millennium stadium is virtually opposite ( the stadium tour was fantastic ) The Castle is opposite and the Natural History museum (also fantastic and free entry ) is close by. All shops arcades etc. are within a comfortable walking distance. The Hotel has clearly undergone a refurb. and all public areas have lavish carpeting and tasteful bright decor whilst retaining the wonderful Victorian charm. The room was small but well equipped and spotless. Every member of staff we came across was exceptionally polite, pleasant, sociable and helpful. The buffet breakfast could not be faulted and my wife found the fresh fruit alternative to my " full English" to be excellent. One slight downside was that due to a lack of double glazing the noise during the night was a little excessive. I was told by the staff that there plans under consideration but with the " listed nature " of the building there are constraints. This in no way spoilt our stay and we were sorry to leave and wish we had booked for a longer stay. We return soon . Thank you Angel.

This place was absolutely fabulously! Everything about the hotel was amazing! We had a view of the castle from our room, that staff when above and beyond, and everything was clean and just beautiful! We would stay there again and again!

We had the £99 deal.

Got upgraded to a suite, which was 2 rooms and large bathroom with bathrobes. Lovely comfy bed but it was quite nosy to sleep as being middle of town. But I suppose that would be in any other hotel in town. And it was very handy to walk everywhere so cant really moan:)

Breakfast was lovely as well. Wouldn't book again for the restaurant, food was ok but I have a feeling I could get better value/taste in other places.

But overall we enjoyed.

Room - stayed in 131 - dusty, floor dirty, window old and drafty, paint peeling, wallpaper ripped, dirty net at window, marks on cupboards, ancient hairdryer

BREAKFAST - ordered room service - came late and missing fruit that I ordered

Didn't complain as I arrived very late and was simply too tired

Receptionist lady was very friendly and competent however
Won't stay again

I have known the Angel hotel since I was a child, but haven't been there for about 20 years, but
my niece was forty recently, and we saw an offer on living social for afternoon tea there, so decided to try it. I was a little put off with some of the trip advisor reports, but we were very pleased with the tea, when we went there. There were 14 of us, and there were plenty of sandwiches and cakes to choose from. The sandwiches were varied and the cakes were also
acceptable ie chocolate ,carrot and palmiers with cream and strawberries on them. There was also a scone with jam and cream. We were offered a choice of tea or coffee, and the offer we had ,also came with a glass of prosecco. The offer worked out at about £7 each. I do not know how much it is normally. The service in fairness was very good considering we were 14 ,We ,ate in the main dining room , looking out to the castle side . The Angel is a lovely building of character, and years ago , was one of the best hotels in Cardiff. Obviously , I am only commenting on our tea, as I haven't stayed there. We all enjoyed what we had, and the offer made the price unbeatable.
