“The restaurant manager from hell”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

The hotel apparently is a mecca for tour buses. There were a number of them there while we were there. The staff was good except for the above. The room was nice and we got to look out on the main drag. The parking is convenient just behind the hotel. The room was a good size and well care for. The hotel was somewhat hard to find using the Garmin since it is only one block long. Everything was good until the next morning we went down for breakfast and waited to be told where to sit. After being seated the manager ask if we wanted tea or coffee, we said tea thank you. He said please and thank you! Then when he brought the tea pot over he put it down briskly and walked away. Later, we asked one of the waitress if we could have a second pot she said yes but she also briskly put the pot down on the table. We watch a couple of seniors come in and select a table and put their water bottles on the table then went to get their buffet breakfast. In the mean time the manager came over to their table and took their water bottles away. After we told the women about the actions of the manager they confronted him and he returned their water bottles. I talked with the hotel manager and she said that she would talked to the restaurant manager. The hotel was fine but staff at least some of them needed to remember who is paying their salary.

Room Tip: try to get a room facing the castle across the street.

We visited here for afternoon tea using a Living Social voucher. The tea was pleasant and well worth the money. A selection of sandwiches, dainty cakes , warm scones with clotted cream and preserves. Served with a glass of prosecco and tea or coffee.
The Angel is a blast from the past , I imagine very grand at one time. The tea room was nice and the adjacent foyer and lounge. The waiter was very pleasant and customer service spot on. We would visit again ........

We recently stopped in this hotel for the rugby could not fault the location, I would agree with several reviews the hotel is in urgent need of a makeover however the staff are excellent all willing to answer any questions. The breakfast was acceptable however the food is kept warm in dishes that all have very large lids which have to be removed by each person in turn and balanced dangerously on top of the next dish ""accident waiting to happen" apart from this we had a enjoyable stay.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

I was pleased to hear you had an enjoyable stay. Thank you for your feedback with regards to the hot dishes at breakfast, these are a temporary standard until the hot buffet counter is replaced.

Thank you for all your comments.

On the surface the place looks OK but underneath, if you bother to take a closer look, the place is in need of a small fortune spending on it to get it up to modern standards. The place is certainly past it's best. The staff were all very good and helpful, no complaints there. The room was clean, needed a coat of paint on the window frames, better still needed new windows! Grotty windows throughout the hotel. Had a fire alarm early morning and had to go down fire escape staircase - that was an eye opener as to the structural state of the place!!
However we booked in advance and got a good price so can't really complain too much. Don't expect Premier Inn standards and you'll get good value for your money.

Room Tip: Paid extra for premium room which was OK but tired, so don't know what the cheaper rooms would b...

Thank you for highlighting your concerns.

We have recently started an internal refurbishment programme to ensure improvements are made where necessary, needless to say certain rooms have been highlighted as a priority.

Jump into the magnificent past, with all the facilities of an up-today hotel !
Room 223 was so quiet, in spite of Amlin and H Cup event... Staff was very efficient and pleasant, and we were just in front of the Arms Park doors....
Many thanks to the barman for his recipe of blackcurrant + Guinness ! sooo gooood !

We stayed here for a night as we were attending an event at the castle across the road. The room was a good size and clean. However everything about it was old. Windows were in need of a coat of paint.

Towels in the room were clean and fresh but not nice and fluffy

Breakfast was OK - but I would have expected a slightly bigger choice of things e.g only 2 type of juice.
