“Good deal”

Get a good deal for B & B and you wont be disappointed I paid £59.00 double room.
Pay the rack rate and you might feel different. This hotel is a bit of an icon, back in day it was the place to be seen on International Rugby day. Reception area is beautiful and impressive, staff helpful and polite. Disappointed with the room it was small and in need of upgrading, breakfast was ok, free wifi, parking available.

Stayed here one night and was very impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff in reception. When we asked if we could leave our case in reception while we visited the university they were happy to oblige. The first impressions of the hotel are also that it is a grand and luxurious building. In the main hall a split staircase is dominated by a fantastic crystal chandelier. However our room was disappointing. It was very shabby and tired looking and the furnishings had clearly seen much better days. On the hairdryer there was a thick covering of something unpleasant and the floor in the corners very dusty. The bathroom was also showing its age with cracked tiles and mould evident. We didn't eat at the hotel as we felt breakfast to be expensive. We walked two minutes down the road to Weatherspoons and had a lovely, cooked to order breakfast for half of what the hotel charged. However the hotel is very well situated opposite the castle and very near the shopping centre, university, central station, buses and Millennium Stadium.

Stayed here for two nights. Staff are friendly, rooms are nice and clean, could do with modernising but its not a major issue. Free wi-fi also great, once it eventually comes up. Yes there is traffic noise but find a hotel in the centre of a capital city that doesnt have traffic noise. Near both the stadium, the castle, and the Cardiff sightseeing bus stop which has a hop on, hop off service and tickets can be used for two days. St David's shopping centre 5 minute walk away and a water bus also 5 minute walk away in order to get to Cardiff bay. All in all a good hotel

Upon arrival at the hotel I thought this would be a great hotel, lovely clean and decent looking reception area; however when you walk further into the hotel you to start to feel that you're going back in time. There are 2 very small lifts that take you to the floors where the rooms are located, these lifts are tiny and creek and groan as they move.

The room, we stayed in room 312 and my fiancee and myself were flabbergasted upon entering the room, at first glance it was like something from a 1970's holiday camp (Butlins, Hi De Hi etc), the there is no air con so we had to keep the sky light open throughout the night, this is not ideal as the hotel is located at the corner of two busy city centre roads. The light switches were cheap plastic things which would not look out of place in an episode of the Antiques Roadshow, likewise the shower unit was ancient and the shower curtain was threadbare. There are dirty black marks all over the bedroom walls, there is plaster visible where two walls meet and the carpet is stinking.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 312

Not sure why there are negative comments, it is an old hotel, however was comfortable enough.

I don't think I would take the wife there for a romantic break but certainly for business and for a few guys/girls going to Cardiff for the weekend .... very good.

I think the lengthy title of this review sums it up pretty well, but I'll elaborate a bit.

Starting with the positives - The Angel is in a very good location, about two minutes walk from Cardiff castle and the city centre. Then there is the ambiance which is quite relaxing - the entrance hall is very grand, although the hallways and stairs feel a little dated. Still, very pleasant in all.

The staff were all helpful whenever we encountered them - from checking in to the waitress in the bar, they were all well mannered and took a little pride in their jobs. No problems there.

Then we come to the two biggest flaws. The rooms and the food. I will save the food until last as that's where my biggest gripes arise.

The rooms then... we booked to stay in a premier room, which - as far as we understood - was a slight upgrade to the standard room. The room itself was big enough as was the bathroom, with modern fixtures and an adequate shower (though it could have been more powerful).

There were some amenities which I enjoyed such as the slippers, bathrobe and mini Welsh cakes, in addition to the regular bottles of water and tea and coffee facilities. The biggest problem with the rooms was the attention to detail, namely - and oddly - the ceiling.

On looking up from the bed there were several damp stains and cracks which wouldn't take much longer than ten minutes for a handyman to properly attend to. It just took the edge off any luxury status that room had. Otherwise the room was nice enough. The bed in particular was very comfortable.

Finally we come to the food. Breakfast the following morning was actually quite nice, with a good array of cooked and continental items, with a strong pot of coffee which went down nicely. However the evening meal we had in the hotel's bar was very poor.

We ordered off the bar menu - both myself and my partner had the Luke Thomas Signature Burger. I'm not sure who Luke Thomas is or why he put his signature to this burger but it was terrible. Firstly, the meat was the driest thing I've ever put in my mouth. It was a thick burger and had been cooked so much that every last drop of moisture had vanished. The menu explained there would be relish (which was needed to combat the dryness) but we had to send a waitress back to get some for us as it had been forgotten. There were no pickles (which were also on the menu as included), while the bacon on the top was more fat than meat. I was starving but left half the burger as it was just unpleasant (I NEVER leave food!). The accompanying chips were actually very nice, but I didn't pay £11.95 for a bowl of chips! The chef either had a very bad day or had no idea what he was doing.

So, to conclude, The Angel is a fine hotel for location and service. If you can find a room for under £75 a night for two people it's probably worth it. Just do yourself a favour and book into one of Cardiff's myriad restaurants for a decent evening meal.
