“The Angel hotel (nothing angelic about it)”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

The Angel hotel, where to begin...
We booked two rooms at this hotel. The hotel building is old; that is a fact.
Room decors were totally out dated. The armchair rests in each room were dirty, worn out and just plain disgusting to be honest. The curtains were extremely dirty and dust was visible at a distance. The bed sheets that were provide were stained with what looked like make-up.
The cushions were extremely low and no additional ones were available in the room.
I did not enjoy staying in the room as the floors were constantly vibrating. So much so, that our suitcases were making squeaking noises. The vibrations made for an unpleasant sleep. The air conditioning that was available in the room wasn't working. The rooms smelt weird, I don't know how to describe the scent as it was the first time I had ever experienced anything like it. It was unpleasant.
The bar staff was not manning the bar (in the afternoon) but was instead, enjoying a chatting session with the receptionist. I had to physically go and call the barman myself in order to get served.
This hotel is definitely not good value for money. The whole experience was unpleasant and I can safely say that I will NOT be staying there again.

I booked a tea for two offer on Living social website for a Saturday afternoon. The staff were very helpful and polite and extremly friendly. The reception area is beautiful and welcoming although the tea room could do with a little update. However the service was spot-on and we were treated to a lovely choice of teas and coffee and prosecco wine with a choice of 3 different sandwich fillings, scones with jam and cream, and various cakes, all of which were tasty and fresh and melt in the mouth. We were left to eat in peace and were not rushed.I would definatly go here again.

Room Tip: Book early for the tea for two especially if you want to go on a Saturday.

Get a good deal for B & B and you wont be disappointed I paid £59.00 double room.
Pay the rack rate and you might feel different. This hotel is a bit of an icon, back in day it was the place to be seen on International Rugby day. Reception area is beautiful and impressive, staff helpful and polite. Disappointed with the room it was small and in need of upgrading, breakfast was ok, free wifi, parking available.

Stayed here one night and was very impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff in reception. When we asked if we could leave our case in reception while we visited the university they were happy to oblige. The first impressions of the hotel are also that it is a grand and luxurious building. In the main hall a split staircase is dominated by a fantastic crystal chandelier. However our room was disappointing. It was very shabby and tired looking and the furnishings had clearly seen much better days. On the hairdryer there was a thick covering of something unpleasant and the floor in the corners very dusty. The bathroom was also showing its age with cracked tiles and mould evident. We didn't eat at the hotel as we felt breakfast to be expensive. We walked two minutes down the road to Weatherspoons and had a lovely, cooked to order breakfast for half of what the hotel charged. However the hotel is very well situated opposite the castle and very near the shopping centre, university, central station, buses and Millennium Stadium.

Stayed here for two nights. Staff are friendly, rooms are nice and clean, could do with modernising but its not a major issue. Free wi-fi also great, once it eventually comes up. Yes there is traffic noise but find a hotel in the centre of a capital city that doesnt have traffic noise. Near both the stadium, the castle, and the Cardiff sightseeing bus stop which has a hop on, hop off service and tickets can be used for two days. St David's shopping centre 5 minute walk away and a water bus also 5 minute walk away in order to get to Cardiff bay. All in all a good hotel

Upon arrival at the hotel I thought this would be a great hotel, lovely clean and decent looking reception area; however when you walk further into the hotel you to start to feel that you're going back in time. There are 2 very small lifts that take you to the floors where the rooms are located, these lifts are tiny and creek and groan as they move.

The room, we stayed in room 312 and my fiancee and myself were flabbergasted upon entering the room, at first glance it was like something from a 1970's holiday camp (Butlins, Hi De Hi etc), the there is no air con so we had to keep the sky light open throughout the night, this is not ideal as the hotel is located at the corner of two busy city centre roads. The light switches were cheap plastic things which would not look out of place in an episode of the Antiques Roadshow, likewise the shower unit was ancient and the shower curtain was threadbare. There are dirty black marks all over the bedroom walls, there is plaster visible where two walls meet and the carpet is stinking.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 312

Not sure why there are negative comments, it is an old hotel, however was comfortable enough.

I don't think I would take the wife there for a romantic break but certainly for business and for a few guys/girls going to Cardiff for the weekend .... very good.
