I recently stayed at the hotel after attending an evening wedding reception. My husband and I stayed in one of the outer rooms (room 43) I would describe it as a shack not a hotel room. The room was dirty and the decor was very old and decrepit! The bed was very old, uncomfortable and had a plastic cover over the mattress! There are many products on the market to protect mattresses, a plastic sheet is not one I would expect in the day and age! The room cost £90 without breakfast. The worst hotel room I have ever stayed in!

On the plus side the staff were lovely especially the bar staff, however I shan't be staying there anytime soon!

Room Tip: Do not stay in the outside rooms (shacks!)

I have used this hotel a few times of late and I fear this will be my last! The food is very good but the rooms are tired and in need of some urgent investment if it is to stay up there with the competition.

We chose to celebrate our wedding reception April 2014 at St Mellons Hotel and Spa...the hotel setting is so lovely and my husband and i felt so welcome there every time we visited Jenni to discuss wedding plans and ask many questions!! Which iam sure Jenni must have heard them all before...but she always made time for us and answered all of our questions and reasured us with any worries...
The hotel itself is a traditional building and fitted in with our vintage wedding theme.. nothing was to much trouble for Jenni and her staff ..even down to white table clothes on the outside tables!!! So lovely...it was all such a lovely experience from start to finish!! Our rooms were all clean and had everything that we needed in them...Room 29 our fantastic honeymoon suite was really lovely...comfy bed and huge bathroom!!! Breakfast really good to... some of our guests had 2nds and 3rds!!
All in all the past year of planning our wedding has been stressfull at times but we would both say a big Thank You to Jenni and Beth for helping with our big day.they both made it amazing!!! Thank you very much.

I managed to find a good deal for a short Easter break with the family booking a family room and a double. With such a good deal I was not expecting 5 star quality but the rooms were quite dated. The swimming pool and spa were great and breakfast fine but the dinner menu could be better.

Stayed in a garden room, nice big room but decor and facilities were tired and worn. Pool was nice but very cold and again, changing facilities were old fashioned and worn. Choosing from kids menu at lunch only to find most options were not available.

The staff very good and most helpfull, the room i had was large clean and a very comfortable double bed nice bathroom with plenty of hot water. The food in the bar was average, but they did not deliver every item i had ordered so they deducted it of the final bill. Early checkout is a problem as they can not take payement untill someone arrives at 07-00am. The night porter a very nice gentleman tried his best to operate the card machine but was unable to i think a little training would help.

Room Tip: Room 202 is large and a very comfortable bed.

I found the 'Mellons' by chance after staying in a few soul less chain hotels in and around Newport. I knew I'd be staying for 8 weeks, it turned out to be 12 in the end! The Hotel has a great pool and spa, and although its clearly not been lavishly cared for, its clean, the staff are really helpful and friendly, and the facilities are superb. Bar and restaurant are good and of course during the winter months (except kids school holidays) it was very quiet.
All in all a fantastic find - in a different league to the big chains - and a great location between Newport and Cardiff. Can't recommend it enough.

Room Tip: Just tell them what you need - there's a big range of rooms and suites, some in the main 'ho...
