“Great location if you go by public transport.”
Reviewed 14 November 2012

This hotel is undergoing major external refurbishment. It may not be a problem at this time of year I.e. short days to have only a view of scaffolding and netting. The downside to the central location is that it is not the most accessible if arriving by car. The front of the hotel is pedestrianised and the back immediately outside the hotel is a bus lane. If you do mange to unload your car outside the hotel there is an NCP car park nearby and the hotel has organised a discounted rate of £10 per 24 hours. Hotel reception is on the 2nd floor. The journey from the hotel to the car park involves (at the hotel's suggestion) driving along a bus lane. If you are arriving by public transport the location is ideal, not far from the station and in the centre of the city. The room was adequate and justified its midweek rate.

Stayed 1 night in this hotel while it was undergoing an exterior makeover. The main reason we chose this hotel was for its location; easily reachable from the train station, and right at the edge of the city centre

We were very pleased with the hotel when we stayed mid-week. The disabled access room was good, it did have a bath rather than roll in shower though. The hotel is fully accessible by lifts, and the breakfast room and bar are also suitable for wheelchairs.

However, we tried to re-book for a weekend in November, to find that the price had nearly doubled due to it being a match day, unbeknownst to us. This has put us off staying at the Royal again, because we now know how willing they are to rip-off guests. Plus they were not full, so maybe other people felt like that too.

We visited Cardiff University with our daughter and classmate.

What was great
- £52 a night special offer as clad outside in scaffolding
- located in centre of Cardiff close to main shops & Millennium Stadium
- parking 3 mins away in Wood Street - great price £10 for 24 hours (take ticket & pay at reception)
- reception - very friendly and helpful
- room clean & contemporary with tea & coffee in room
- good quality tv with HD (Samsung) + free internet (easy access & no sign-ups)
- bar - friendly service & no inflated prices - c£6 white wine spritzer & Brain SA Beer
Not so good:
- Breakfast - continental £9 / full £11.25! - ridiculous went elsewhere
- Our mattress needed replacing - we are not heavy - but it sagged as you tried to sleep.

Room Tip: Hotel on floors 2-7 - book higher floors to minimise city noise

Staff very friendly and helpful. Made to feel welcome immediately even though we arrived about 2 hours before check in time. Our case was taken and we were asked if there was anything else they could help us with. We would have been able to check in at 2 pm rather than 3 if we had wanted .

Very nice place to stay if you are a visiting Cardiff on your own, the rooms are lovely, the service very attentive and the security seems very safe. The breakfast was nice in a nice setting. The staff all seemed happy and positive. Had a bit of trouble getting into the wifi, but otherwise brilliant stay.

Some friends and I stayed at The Royal for a long weekend, the location is great if you are planning on spending a lot of time in the centre really close to shops/restaurants and nightlife.

We found the staff very friendly and attentive to our needs throughout our stay.

The bedrooms were lovely and modern and the bathrooms were very clean, the beds were extremely comfortable. The only complaint about the room if I was being picky would be that the light in the bathroom or bedroom isn't great its quite dark meaning its hard to see yourself fully in the mirror whilst applying makeup!! (Only girls would notice this!)

Breakfast was included in our package and there was a wide variety of choice, we also had cocktails at the bar and ordered room service and it was all great and reasonably priced.

With their being so many hotels in the centre of Cardiff we found it hard to pick, but we were so impressed with The Royal and definitely plan to return next year I would recommend to friends.
