“Cardiff Royal Hotel Review”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2013

Wonderfully located only a 5 minutes walk from Cardiff Central Station, and easy to find. Centrally located, with Cardiff Castle, shopping & restaurants 10 minutes walk away.
They happily stored our luggage as we arrived too early for check-in, and same on check-out (we explored Cardiff Bay before our afternoon train).
Oddly laid out, as reception is on the 1st floor (there is a lift).
Our room was fantastic & spacious, with a large comfy bed, sofa, big TV, tea/coffee point. The bathroom was nicely stocked too.
The reception staff could have been a tad more smiley and welcome.
No on-site parking so we travelled from Bristol on the train.
A little noisy at night, but nothing unexpected for a weekend in a city centre.

For parking tips see the end of this review.

The hotel is in a fantastic central location, close to bus and train stations and on the pedestrianised central city area. As others have noted, noise can be somewhat of an issue at night. Our room was fine, though a little small, really only one person could move around the bed at a time, but all the facilities are up to standard, bathroom is modern, clean. The advertised free wifi is not really accurate as we found it impossible to connect in our bedroom though access was better, though slow in the public lounge area. However, there are many other free wifi restaurants, cafes, etc in close vicinity so wasn't too much of a problem.

If you are bringing a car you can park in the nearby NCP Wood St carpark which is accessed off the St Mary St and Penarth Road intersection (round behind Travelodge), and take the car park barrier ticket with you to the hotel. They validate it for you at reception where you get a cheaper rate of 12 pounds a day, so when you return to the car you can exit with the validated ticket. In other words you can go straight away to park your car, you don't need to check in with the hotel first. The carpark is a short distance away by foot.

We had a triple room which was lovely and suited our needs. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We also enjoyed the breakfast which was included in our room.
However we probably wouldn't stay here again due to a couple of reasons - it was so hot inside despite using the aircon and there was noise from the street outside both when the clubs came out and with early morning deliveries to local shops. This all disturbed our sleep, which doesn't make for happy people!
Despite that it was a very nice hotel and we could not fault the service from the staff. It's also very central and good value for money.

Room Tip: A room facing away from St Mary's street might have been better and quieter

I think I must have stayed in the same room as the reviewer who published on 4th August, and I would echo their sentiments almost word-for-word. I have stayed in this hotel a number of times over the last few years whilst on business trip, and I have usually been happy enough at the prospect of returning here. It's an old and quirky building with rooms of different shapes and sizes, and that gives it a bit of character which many of the modern hotels lack. It is always clean and comfortable. On this occasion though, having been allocated the small wedge-shaped room on the fourth floor, I spent a night in what felt like a sauna. It was a very warm night, it is not possible to open the windows, and the air-con in this room simply does not work. There was a fan, but fans don't cool air, they just move it around. But better than nothing, I suppose. I usually enjoy having my breakfast in the historic Scott Room, although on this occasion it was occupied by what appeared to be a film crew, so we were served breakfast in the bar. I'll probably give it another try in the future, but I shall make sure I get a room cool enough to sleep in next time.

Room Tip: Larger rooms are cooler.

If you need to be in Cardiff, then this hotel is one of your better options. There are many good things about Cardiff I am sure and I'll probably think of a couple shortly. But this hotel is a good one. Slightly quirky in layout - if you come in the front door, you go down some stairs in order to get the lift up to reception! The rooms are well furnished and pretty clean although you may need a little bit of practice to actually find your particular room - it is a bit of a maze.

First impressions were not that good, reception was pretty lacklustre and unenthusiastic but later experience revealed some very good, professional, friendly and helpful staff. I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat in the hotel (other than breakfast), but there seemed to be a steady stream of hotel guests and outside patrons ready to give it a go, so they must be doing something right. Bar service is friendly and efficient (even if the choice of beers is limited) and the staff seemed to cope with some bizarre cocktail requests very well.

All in all, a pleasant experience. Would I go back? To the hotel for sure, Cardiff I'm not so certain about, although one thing I do remember is that the nightlife is pretty spectacular to put in mildly. If you're in Cardiff this is a hotel you should try.

After figuring out how to get to this hotel with it being in a pedestrian zone, we were pleasantly surprised with our stay. Staff were very friendly and helpful and location was within walking distance of many attractions. We would like to return with better weather and would definitely book here again.

The location of this hotel is brilliant, as it's a 3 minute walk from the Cardiff Central train station.
The room was a good size and the bathroom was very large and modern. The staff were really helpful and knowledgable about the city area, and gave us suggestions about where to go and sightsee and also where to eat.

Room Tip: We were on level 5 and didn't hear any street noise at all - ask for a room higher up.
