“Decent stay close to centre and train/bus stations”
Reviewed 11 July 2014 via mobile

I was hesitant to stay here after reading some of the reviews below, however I was rather surprised. The place was clean and tidy, I didn't expect an 18 bed dorm but it was usually quiet and wasn't full over the weekend anyway. It's in a good location right next to the bus and train stations and centre of Cardiff. The staff weren't overly friendly/helpful, but they weren't as bad as I read further down. It's a decent place to stay in but I wasn't really happy with the size of the dorms as it is not stated when you book and if I'd have known would have booked elsewhere.

After seeing photos and other reviews, I was really looking forward to staying at this hostel. On entry the place looked great, the staff were pleasant and we preceded to get settled. The rooms were average. I started in a 6 bed dorm which had triple bunk beds. They were not very stable and as soon as anybody moves in the slightest the whole bed shakes terribly. The window in our room was broken and the only way to keep it up was to put a bottle underneath it. The room was right on the main Street aswell so when music played it was loud. You couldn't close the window either because the room turned into a sauna.
The hostels showers are the worst I've experienced in a hostel. The girls showers were cold every time with a hint of heat every now and then. I stayed for 5 nights so it wasn't a one off thing.
The common area downstairs feels like a dungeon with the 'kitchen' consisting of 2 microwaves, a kettle and small fridge. Being backpackers, my boyfriend and I booked this especially for the kitchen as we had a long stay there. The actual common area near reception is literally a bar and at night it gives the hostel a horrible feeling... You almost feel like your imposing on random guests who aren't staying at the hostel.
The breakfast is average as most hostel breakfasts are however, what annoyed me was that it only went until 9am! Not very time friendly for travelers who might need to catch up on some sleep. Also, i don't know why but when checking the cost of this hostel after booking and paying i noticed that the hostel dropped the price almost £5 on the same nights i was staying there! Way to expensive for what you got here. The location is the one good thing about this hostel as its smack bang in the centre of Cardiff.
This hostel is just lacking for travelers. If you are here for one night to get trashed then this hostel is probably fine for you but if you want somewhere that feels a bit more homely with more travelers, I'd go elsewhere.

This is an excellent hostel right in the heart of Cardiff on the main street where all the action is, if you want nightlife that is. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are helpful. Breakfast is cheap and cheerful and the bar is fine. Internet is good and there is plenty of room to move around and comfy chairs to sit in. The basement is good for chilling out in too. At £11 for a bed during the week this is the cheapest hostel in Cardiff and one of the best.

Room Tip: All the rooms were pretty much the same but the ones at the rear are the noisiest.

We stayed here for the rugby against Wales in April and whilst I can imagine nothing worse than a bunch of Scots descending upon you, we were well behaved and felt we were judged from the off, with the stinking attitude of the staff. The bar was fine, the breakfast was okay. Room was basic. Shame as it is in a great location, Cardiff is a great place and the Welsh are fantastic. However, I will be paying extra not to stay here.

We was greeted by a miserable tired receptionist, and this is where the rooms keys got handed out my Key card didn't work even after getting it changed. There is one toilet per floor which was always low on toilet paper (brillo pads) the rooms could have done with some sort of drinking water and a window that stayed open these two things may have made a very hot and uncomfortable sleep more bearable. Finally the man who opened the door of a night was looking for a fight with everyone, what a jobs worth. Complete and utter helmet

We went here for my mate's birthday recently...between a group of us we had to pay for our own dorm but still worked out really cheap. Receptionist was comically stropey as soon as we walked in... but bar seemed nice and overall good value for the money we paid.

We stayed here as part of a hen weekend. Not entirely sure we were the type of group they wanted, particularly as fancy dress was banned in the bar area. The receptionist was less than helpful, which wasn't great. The communal areas however are beautiful and quirky and there is some good outside seating as well. The bedrooms were small and basic with an average size shared bathroom. The location is ideal as it's so close to the train station and nightlife. I would only really stay again in a similar context!
