“Great Hotel- Shame about our room view!”
Reviewed 13 August 2012

Hotel was gorgeous. Very modern and comfortable and has a 5* feel to it. Only downside is that our room was overlooking the railway which can be a little noisy when you're trying to sleep. Also, was woke up really early by some people screaming outside in the corridor but I suppose that's not the hotels fault. Would definitely stay again but would ask to have a room on the front of the hotel.

Room Tip: Request a room at the front of the hotel!

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel for the value. There's nothing special about it; it's a pretty standard hotel minus a few standard conveniences.

To elaborate:
What they fail to make you aware of when you book (at least on the internet, that is) is their extreme eco-friendly policies. There are no toiletries in the bathrooms; the lights in the hallways are motion-sensored so you're pretty much in the dark for a few seconds as you walk down the hall. That being said, the beds are comfortable and our room was clean, so I have nothing much to complain about on that front.

The location of this hotel has both its advantages and disadvantages. It's adjacent to the train station, which was good for us because we arrived via rail and didn't have to waste our money on additional public transport. At night, the sound of trains rumbling by is pretty tough. Tolerable, but tough. Of course, this is not the fault of the hotel, nor is it an issue of customer service. It's just a thing to bear in mind if absolute quiet is an important factor to you.

The hotel's proximity to the train station also puts it in a sort of "scuzzy" area. We arrived at night and were quite uncomfortable walking around the neighborhood. Lots of young people stumbling out of bars and nightclubs-- raucous and loud, which is fine...except there were other "characters" that we had to be wary of. There were policemen every few blocks or so; nothing was particularly wrong...it was actually sort of alarming because patrolling these streets seemed to be part of their regular shift.

In the daytime, the area has less of a sinister vibe. If you walk a few blocks up towards the castle, you'll find yourself immersed in a high-traffic shopping area.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor and on the side of the hotel opposite the train station. Avoid t...

Dear Brianna C,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review on tripadvisor. We appreciate your feedback & use it to improve the service we provide.

As mentioned, in these times we have a social responsibility to the environment. We believe that our actions as a company will have an impact on our future generations & understand that we must make a conscious effect to reduce our carbon footprint. I apologize if you found this inconvenient.

As stated in your review we are a city centre hotel adjacent to the central train station. As a 12 storey building we find that upper floors or internal facing rooms may have less disturbance from street or train noise. On a return visit please contact a member of the team & they will be happy to allocate one of these rooms for you.

Cardiff Council takes a proactive approach to dealing with undesirable characters. Their presence in the city is aimed at the safety of hundreds of visitors & families that come each night. They are proactively working to improve the city as a whole & we feel as a local business there actions have had a positive impact over the last 12 months. We foresee their continuing efforts over the coming years can only improve this vibrant city.

I hope you will consider staying with us in the future.

Warm regards,
Alison Mansfield

The 2-year old modern hotel is a 1-minute walk from the train station and conveniently located near one of the town's two main tourist areas -- (the old city and Cardiff Castle). Rooms are decent size for European hotels, clean and air-conditioned. No king beds available.

Hotel has a small bar and fair restaurant. All-in-all good value for the money.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room; they are somewhat larger and have two exposures.

Dear Pilotbocaraton_fl,

Thank you for your positive review on trip advisor. I appreciate you taking the time to write with your feedback.

As a new hotel we work to improve our offerings with every guest comment. We currently have 9 king rooms in our hotel, however as these rooms are limited we cannot offer them to every guest. Let me know on your return visit to Cardiff & I would be happy to assign you one of these rooms.

I hope you come to stay with us again.

Warm Regards,
Alison Mansfield

My wife and I stayed at the Maldron for 1 evening in July.

Reception/checking in – Very pain free! The staff were very helpful. The reception area is very small however.

Room – Very quirky and modern. We had a room on a high floor and the view over the city from the corner window was amazing. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious (also had a bathtub).

Breakfast – Usual buffet style with an ok selection, nothing to shout about.

Price- We booked thro trip advisor to take advantage of the discounted rate. It must be the best value for money hotel in the centre of Cardiff. It ended up cheaper than Travelodge.

Location – Could not be better really. The hotel is sited at the top end of St Mary’s Street which is the main place in Cardiff for entertainment (restaurants, pubs, clubs etc). It’s also less than a 5min walk to the main shopping district (St David’s 2).

Car Parking – We parked in the Cardiff Central Railway Station car park which is sited behind the train station and just to the rear of the hotel (2min walk). It’s £9 for 24 hours which is very reasonable in Cardiff.

I would highly recommend this hotel. The quality you get for the little price (when booked through tripadvisor) cannot be beaten.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor to take advantage of teh views

Stayed here for the Olympic football, two families in adjoining rooms. Hotel was very central for Millenium Stadium, Train Station and retail therapy :-) ... Rooms had adequate facilities which were very clean. We ate in the restaurant, food was excellent, service mediocre (even though it was very quiet).. Reception staff very efficicient, approachable & friendly. We would definitely consider this hotel again, even though we normally stay at the Hilton. Only negative would really be the restaurant service, which was poor..

Room Tip: We stayed on 7th floor, no noise problems as mentioned by other people

It's hard to beat the location if arriving by train and it's very convenient to the city center and reasonably priced.

As others have mentioned, breakfast across the street at the Great Western is a much better value and we had some issues with general noise, especially slamming fire doors/stairwell doors right outside our room.

Rooms are decent enough but not very sound-proof; general feel is a little sterile and small in the rooms but for the price it's easy enough to live with.

Weirdly greeted upon check in with unfriendly tone but staff were generally friendly. The rooms were nice, modern and clean though had an joining room which got a little noisy, especially when they had sex one morning. Comfy big bed and nice view over the bay from the south side 7th floor room typical room amenities with tea and coffee, big tv and big bath. Seemed to be full of stag and hen parties which was unexpected for how nice the hotel seemed and the price but wasn't really a problem though got a little noisy in the morning. We were offered breakfast at a reduced rate but the price changed twice when we asked again. Very good location in the centre of town. Good for a midweek reasonably priced stay in Cardiff but I'd recommend another chain hotel for better value for money.
