Owner description: In our fun, free and interactive galleries, discover how Cardiff was transformed from the small market town of the 1300s, to one of the world's biggest ports in the 1900s, to the cool, cosmopolitan capital we know today. The museum, in the beautiful and historic Old Library building, is rich in stories, objects, photographs and film telling the history of Cardiff through the eyes of those who created the city – its people.

“Small but perfectly formed”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

This museum is situated in the City centre & is well worth a visit.
I especially found the short films interesting as they were clips of people speaking about their work & lives. It was fascinating hearing all about past workplaces which no longer exist.
This museum is quite small, so you won't need to dedicate a lot of time for a visit, but it is quite fascinating reading all about the history of the area.

“Examine, Experience, Explore...but not Exterminate !”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

The Cardiff Story is an island of serenity in the heart of busy, bustling Cardiff. Housed next to the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Library, the building, itself, being an historical icon ( its statues featuring in a Dr.Who episode called 'Blink').

The Museum tells the Story of Cardiff, as opposed to Wales ( at the National Museum). There are quite a few interactive features: the Time screen, the rotating Victorian house (which visitors don't tend to rotate!), the 3D map of important buildings, the coal race ( horse, barge, train), the seal and lioness ( sit on them and they honk or roar), a magnetic timeline, dressing up clothes for small children...

Well, worth seeing for half an hour, if you're in a rush, before going out to explore the city centre, arcades, civic centre, cathedral and Bay of Cardiff.

Sadly, very little reference to the TV/film industry: Dr.Who, Terry Nation and the Daleks, Sarah Jane, Torchwood, Merlin, Sherlock, Casualty, Wizards v Aliens.... The building needs a trolleybuse or a TARDIS outside to attract visitors and locals through the doors !

I visited here last year and it was a complete waste of time. I was a bit stunned to how little was on the Ground Floor so I visited the First Floor to find it was just as bad! It was pretty terrible! I recommend for you to avoid wasting time going here
