As a regular at Sands Hairdresser next door, have thought for ages that I must give it a go. Decided to treat a friend to afternoon tea the Day after Mothering Sunday, booked for hight tea for two, I was asked if we had any special dietary requirements,
High tea is booked at 1 and half hour intervals 1.30pm, 3pm or 4.30. When we arrived we're greeted and shown to our table, asked if we'd been before, explained the system, you'll get finger sandwiches, scones with strawberry jam and cream, chocolate truffles then you chose two varieties of cake from the display. My friend chose cappuccino as a beverage and I chose Ceylon black tea from the vast selection, the owner asked if I'd tried Ceylon tea before when he brought my tea ( with a timer for the perfect infusion ). Such smiling friendly service! Sandwiches very tasty and all cake moist, scones still warm! Lovely atmosphere but can feel a bit over full and somewhat claustrophobic, a problem of success! My only slight grizzle is that the chairs were solid wood and we're becoming a bit uncomfortable by the end of our visit, there are more comfy easy chairs but of course they're taken quickly. Good value for money, would go again.

This place is great for trying out different types of teas.
The choice of teas is vast and you really are spoilt for choice.
Sometimes its so difficult to figure out what you want, but each time you have a different tea its like going on a mini adventure.

I have been here a few times with friends etc and had the afternoon tea which was lovely. The portion sizes are generous. However, some people may consider the price to be a bit steep for two adults. However, when compared with what is charged in London for an afternoon tea then this amount is really reasonable.

I booked a table here for lunch just after Mother's Day. I took my parents as a nice treat and a change from pub lunches or cafe food.

Interior is nice enough, although padded chairs would be nice rather than just wooden seats.

The young waiter was very friendly and helpful, he talked us through the extensive tea menu and explained the order process (sandwiches and scones are brought out on a tiered stand, you choose your own cake from the display at the front which is then added to your stand).

The mixed sandwiches were very nice although we all found the chutney a bit overpoweringly sweet. I loved the mixed pepper filling. You get the equivalent of one piece of sandwich per person per filling (they are cut into finger size one third portions per full sandwich) scones were lovely and they really fill you up. Mother chose the coffee cake which personally I found a bit sickly sweet, dad chose the ginger cake which was nice and I chose the chilli chocolate orange cake which was very nice (not too much chilli).

All in all, we came away satisfyingly full and it fulfilled the criteria of a nice lunch time treat.

I've been here several times now and it's one of my favourite places to go to in Cardiff for tea, they have an enormous choice of tea and on previous occasions when I've been and misjudged my choice of tea (they even warned me) and I didn't like it the person working that day offered to change my tea to a different type of free. You couldn't ask for better service than that. My only warning would be that it is often busy so it might be worth reserving a table to guarantee a seat if you're in a big group.
