This place looks the part when you walk in. I had booked for a birthday celebration on the back of an article recommendation in one of the Cardiff magazines.

The styling is very impressive. However I thought it was meant to be more of a restaurant than a pub with a pub menu.

Upon ordering the steak, I noted it should have been with 3 times cooked chips, vine tomatoes and field mushrooms- sounds good, right??

Wrong- when it appeared, it looked like something out of a greasy spoon cafe. There were no vine tomatoes or field mushrooms, just a big old tasteless part cooked tomato with the steak and a few chips.

Upon questioning the staff, I was offered two excuses, 1- there was a wedding upstairs so all the ingredients had been used for that food and 2- they were a chef down?!
Simple- don't attempt to serve food that will wreck your reputation and credibility.

Do not bother booking here, I might give it a passing glance if I simply wanted say a lunch to stop me feeling hungry and I wasn't that bothered about taste or presentation. Certainly don't plan to have a celebratory meal here- you will be disappointed.

My Wife and I stayed in Jolyon's in their Barbary Suite which was lovely having a separate lounge and jacuzzi bath with "Mood Lighting". Everything about the Hotel (including the food) was great, but I must say the best thing was the staff, I have travelled extensively, and have rarely found more happy welcoming people.

Would absolutely recommend this Boutique hotel which was conveniently placed to walk into Cardiff city too.

Room Tip: Try and book a suite. (Not expensive)

This was our second stay at Jolyons', though we often call in for a drink when passing. Once again couldn' fault the place, staff all very young but so obliging and everyone smiles, it's so great to see when they are all obviously working so hard. The atmosphere is the best, the location, if you're a visitor cannot be bettered, plenty to do in and around Cardiff. Parking is a problem in the hotel but there are plenty of parking areas, free and payable within a short walk of the hotel. If you have a Ferrari a call to the hotel to arrange your own space withing the hotel would not go amiss
One complaint - the rooms are just too hot, you need to open windows and leave them open it would seem they have underfloor heating with no thermostats, it's all or nothing..

Room Tip: Back of the hotel is a lot quieter.

My husband and I stayed in the Venetian Suite and I was excited at staying in a luxury suite. In reality the room was sparsely furnished to the extent is seemed unfinished with cheap feeling carpet and not a single picture on the wall which made it feel bare rather than minimalist.
The room was unbearably hot so I got very little sleep and there was a lot of traffic noise.
The steam iron sprayed white dust all over my clothes and the miniature ironing board was a joke. Given we paid £144 for one night I would expect a full sized ironing board.
The bathroom was lovely but shower caps would be appreciated as the monsoon shower means you either get drenched or don't shower.
On the plus side the location is great, the staff lovely and breakfast exceptional. We didn't use the bar but it looked very nice.
The hotel car park was full but there is a pay and display car park at the back of the hotel, £10 for 24 hours and you can pay by card which is handy.
Overall, a decent hotel which is trying to be luxury boutique and doesn't quite manage it. Still a nice hotel and I would stay again but wouldn't pay the extra for a suite.

Lovely hotel in perfect location for the city centre, castle, SWALEC, Millenium stadium and Sophie Gardens. Very friendly, helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We stayed just one night and had a compact double room which was absolutely delightful. We will definitely stay here when we come back to Cardiff. J from Bedfordshire

This was our visit to a boutique hotel and first impresions were really good. Nice big room, very nice bathroom with mood lighting and large bath/shower and attentive service. Hotel in a good position for town and both free parking and free wi-fi. Room very warm on arrival so we opened windows wide, since there is no air conditioning.

2 course meal was part of deal and unfortunately the ribeye steaks we chose were poorly cooked, with both chips and steak barely warm. The waiter was very helpful in sorting this out.

On returning to our room, no.203, the room was still very warm despite the windows being open and we put fan on to try and cool things down. The room is above kitchen and there seemed to be people in and out of there through the night so we needed to close windows because of the noise from road and from downstairs. But doing this made the room like a sauna. About 1am I moved to sleep on floor next to door to try and cool down. The worst nights sleep in a hotel room I have ever experienced.

This was such a shame since the hotel is really very nice.

Room Tip: Don't book 203 unless you like it hot
