“Not without problems”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

There is good and bad about Jolyon's. On the good side, the staff are great, attentive, friendly and efficient. The bar, restaurant and public areas downstairs live up to the "boutique" promise and the food is good. Then the problems start. The back of the hotel is a converted 1970s or 1980s office block and I suspect the compromises of this building mean Jolyon's can't deliver the quality it seeks to offer. My room (203) was unbearably hot and stuffy - even with windows open when it was then noisy - resulting in little sleep. They know about this problem (it is also mentioned in other reviews here) as when they showed me to the room they opened the windows and pointed out the plug-in fan. But it's unacceptably hot. Either the insulation is very bad (in which case it will also be cold in winter) or the underfloor heating is jammed on - or some other issue they can't resolve. The plain corporate box room sits uncomfortably with the "boutique" furnishings - and while I'm all for subtle lighting, I couldn't actually see to shave in the bathroom - although I did notice the toilet flush button was missing and hadn't been replaced. This left me feeling they prioritised appearance over substance. And also left me feeling tired.
I was looking for a hotel for a regular weekly booking. The airless heat of room 203 - and their inability to tackle it - means it won't be Jolyon's unfortunately.

The room itself was clean and quite stylish. The bathroom had a good shower, small bath, or rather large shower tray, but the windows were clear glass so the blinds had to be closed. Lighting in the bathroom was very dim and the windows didn't open at all so by the time you'd had a shower it turned into a steam room.
It was very near to the taxi bus and buses but it was £10.20 to park for 24 hours.
We visited on a Friday night and it was extremely noisy. We had the windows open as it was hot so heard all the noise from people outside until 2-3am. Also the doors to the rooms slam and it felt like the wall shook when the people from next door returned to their rooms.
Most of the staff were friendly although when we came to check in at about 1pm the woman at reception was adamant and quite rude that 3pm was the earliest to check in. The 3pm check in was fine but there was no need to be quite so dogmatic. We won't be returning.

Fab hotel tucked just round the corner from the castle and stadium. The staff we're very helpful and friendly from start to end. I requested gluten free breakfast which was happily catered for. Good rooms whilst a little plain but otherwise clean, nice linen and a comfy mattress!! Would definitely return. Very good value.

My wife and i stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
The hotel was impeccably clean and our room was a really good size. The bed was probably the most comfortable i've ever experienced staying in a hotel, and the 'light therapy' option in the bath was a unique touch.
The staff was also absolutely top notch, especially when we checked in as the lady showed us to our room and was very friendly.
There were only 2 things which stopped this being a perfect break, the first being that there was an office which was almost touching distance away which could see straight into the room. The main one though was that the room was unbearably hot, so much so that we hardly slept. We had to have the fan right next to the bed just to get a bit of coolness which also prevented us from getting a good sleep due to the noise. To the managements credit though they were very apologetic when we checked out and did give us a discount.
If they could sort the air conditioning out in the rooms this would be an almost perfect hotel and i wouldn't hesitate in coming back again.

Nice boutique hotel, with a lovely warm welcome from Ester the receptionist. Comfortable, clean, modern room with good facilities, great food and just a short walk into town. My first overnight stay in Cardiff, but if I return I will surely stay here again.

Room Tip: If it's a quiet room you're after, ask for the fourth (top) floor because the noise from the...

A disappointing stay here. The room was unbearably hot, even with the windows open and the fan on.
My husband asked for an extended check out time of 1pm, and even though he offered to pay extra, he was refused. How bad could 2 hours be in the cleaning schedule? The front desk person (manager?) was not helpful or friendly in the slightest.
There is only parking available for 4 cars and these spots are booked months in advance! You have to use a public car park at 10 pounds a night.

Room Tip: Don't get a room on the sunny side!
