“Great Chinese food not often seen in UK”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2013

As far as I am concerned cn has it all. I have been going there about 3 times a month for over a year and have never been disappointed. The menu is exceptionally wide ranging with many authentic dishes from Northern China. Don‘t be put off when you see pig maw (stomach lining), beef tongue, or chicken gizzard – just some of the more interesting dishes, because there are plenty of others to appeal to Western tastes. The hot & spicy golden crab is wonderful although it takes some time for me to deal with the shell. My present favourite is the braised seabass but I like to try different things as well. The young staff are all very welcoming and are pleased to help with choices. The main clientele is Chinese with many students from the university. They usually arrive in groups and invariably choose to have another speciality, the hotpot. That is a ‘cook yourself’ meal with a choice of soup bases over a hot flame. There are many meats, seafoods, vegetables and other flavourings to suit anybody’s taste but don’t expect a quick meal – it takes a while to get through it all. The bill naturally varies with the choice of food, tea, beer, or wine but is surprisingly reasonable considering the quality. The only downside is that we do not get to see so much of Nathan, the helpful co-owner, these days.

“Simply Superb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2013

The best Chinese food I've ever eaten. A simple room, with not a lot of atmosphere, it has to be said, but really authentic dishes on the menu, using things like pigs intestines, pig's tripe, pig cheeks (delicious). the lamb with cumin was absolutely fantastic: a really simple dish of slices of tender lamb cooked with crushed whole cumin seeds and garli with a sprinkling of fresh coriander, but it was absolutely amazing. The star of the meal for me was the ox tongue cooked with dried red chilies and Szechuan peppercorns. It comes with a mountain of dried chilies and the combination with the peppercorns produces the most incredible spectrum of flavours: I couldn't stop thinking about it all the next day. We also had the crispy roast lamb breast, shredded potato with chilli (really unusual and very tasty – sort of like raw potato spaghetti). next time, I think I'll try one of their hotpots: sort of like a Chinese fondue. A lot of the people in the restaurant were ordering them. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. Probably the best thing, though, was the bill: a blowout for three people with two bottles of wine and a few beers came to £78!

“Delicious!”

I've eaten many Chinese meals in the UK and China, this was comparable to the best amoungst them. Pig cheeks and beef black bean worthy of extra praise. Give it a go.

“yum - not your normal chinese”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2013

best chinese we've ever had. We went as a couple, but the restuarant was full of table of 6 which was not a bad thing as this indicated that the food was good and authentic, this restuarant is definately for groups as it is brightly lit and is also a takeaway. The food was very tasty, although the chicken we choose did come with small bones (bit of a shock as it was almost like a tooth had come out) the prawns came shell on, which I wasn't expecting and helped make the tablecloth look like a work of art Salt and pepper squid best eaten when hot. shredded pork with chlllies was delicious.Guotie (dumplings) also hit the spot. most tables had the 'hot pot' which meant you cooked the food at your table a bit like a fondue without the cheese No delay in food coming out all dishes arrived swiftly We will be going back but with some more of our adventureous freinds as it is not a chinese as expected, no prawn toasts no seaweed
