Owner description: ADVANCED BOOKING ESSENTIAL: A 90 minute personal tour of the fairytale castle brought to you by "Cardiff History and Hauntings". Hear tales outside of its mysterious medieval beginnings, with clues of life here when Welsh and English fought for this land. Then we step inside to enjoy the dazzling interiors - a fantasy fairytale castle, each room with a theme - while hearing stories of the family who owned, but rarely visited it.

I'm so glad I found the details of this tour on the web as it was wonderful. Jim Cowan, the guide, has so much history and knowledge of not only Castell Coch but the surrounding area. This tour ties in so well with a visit to Cardiff Castle. You wil be taken aback by the beauty of Castell Coch and its setting. A big thank you to Jim for a fantastic tour that was thoroughly enjoyable. I'm looking forward to going on the ghost tour Jim does the next time I visit.

As a family we had often visited Castell Coch with our small children, had a fine time and learned little - we knew it was a fantastic Victorian attempt to recreate a mediaeval castle, but little more. Fifteen or so years later we decided to take some visiting friends from Croatia and their two youngsters, plus some guests from China, on a more structured visit. Jim Cowan (the owner of the company) was waiting at the steps of the drawbridge to meet us - and for two hours kept all of us (from 5 to 65 years of age) completely engaged with his account of the history of this super building (used as background for many films, including one of the 'Robin Hood' versions). His knowledge and expertise ranged from the original settlements in the area over 2,000 years back, through the Victorian construction of the modern castle and the ambitions of the coal mine owning Bute family who commissioned it, to the economy of south Wales. Jim's enthusing style encouraged questions from all of us, and made us feel thoroughly involved as we walked around the solid outside walls, inner keep and balcony and superbly painted interior. His expertise was wide, and we learned so much about the structure and significance of the wall paintings - even the junior guests were fascinated; we left planning more visits with his company. The Castle is situated high above the Taff gorge in deep woodland, but no more than 10 minutes from Cardiff by car, bus or train (Jim will advise on all options). For any visitor to Cardiff this is a five-star 'must do' - and the same goes for those of us who live nearby but never realised the full significance of this historic feature of Wales' cultural and architectural inheritance. Don't neglect this opportunity to experience a different world with an excellent communicator
