Cafe Sereno is a lovely little cafe/restaurant on Albany Road in Roath. Inside, it is pleasantly furnished and has a cozy atmosphere. There is a garden with seating in the back, if the weather is nice.

I have to admit that I have not sampled a great variety of dishes from their menu. It all looks pleasant enough, but I only ever ate the rarebit and buck rarebit (rarebit with bacon). In case you're not aware, rarebit is one of the Welsh national dishes, and is basically cheese grilled on toast. There is always something a bit more going on - a little milk, or a little egg, sometimes mustard, sometimes other refinements. But at its heart, it's a slightly fancier version of cheese on toast.

And the rarebit in Cafe Sereno is hands down the best I've tried. A hint of Worcester Sauce, and the cheese topping delightfully, deliciously browned. A simple dish it may be, but here, it's done very well indeed. So if you're keen to try this Welsh national dish, this is the best place to do so in Cardiff, in my opinion.

I agree with the last review, very nice food and very nice service, nice that they open early and stay open late and that they serve alcohol

Could do with a working website though as Duncan says, as people do like to check out menus and prices before they visit, luckily as I live in roath i can have a pop in on the way past and not worry about it, but a website would help a lot for people looking around.

Oh yes and very nice and very filling sauce with the pasta

I stumbled upon Café Sereno about 5 years ago when I first moved to Cardiff and it set the standard for small, clean, welcoming Cafés with a high standard of food at ridiculously low prices. The staff are fantastic and the service is amazing.

They have a great range of food which is consistently great, and is open early in the morning through until rather later at night. (They also sell alcohol)

I recently moved back to Roath and have started to go to Sereno's as frequently as I used to, bringing more and more friends as they spread the word.

The owner (Sean) is often found cooking (And never seems to take time off) and the second Chef (Who I'm not sure of his name) is forever working and again never seems to take time off.

It does appear that most of the waiting staff are ginger......a theme maybe?!

It's a pity they don't have a functioning website, they use to it seems until it got taken and used for malware so be warned when searching for their site.

All in all a great Café which I can't praise highly enough!!
