Our biggest disappointment was that the windows did not open, so when we stayed in midsummer, we were stuck with either a stifling airless room or loud and chilling air conditioning, but no fresh air; something which prevented us from sleeping. I asked at the reception and was told that the windows simply do not open, not in any of the rooms. In addition to this one of the windows leaked a bit when it rained - not really what I would expect from a four star hotel. Due to lack of maintenance the lighting in the room was not adequate - so it was difficult to read at night, as one of the bedside lamps and the floor-standing lamp both did not work. Again I asked reception if they could fix this - I called twice from my room on different days and also asked in person at the reception, but I was told that maybe the floor standing lamp could be replaced, but that the bedside lamp bulb could not be replaced during our four night stay as the hotel maintenance person would have to do it. Anyway - neither bulb/lamp was replaced during our stay. Things such as this gave the hotel a shabby air, as did the grimy bits we noticed around the bath taps and toilet seat. Although the huge windows let in lots of light, at night when light was still flooding into the room from the big gap where the curtains didn’t meet, it wasn't so welcome. Staff, especially at breakfast, seemed hassled, sometimes running out of teapots so that a cup of hot-ish water with a teabag on the side was brought out instead of the usual teapot and breakfast items would run out before being replaced some time later. On the plus side the hotel was very convenient for the course I was doing at the hotel – this was the reason I had booked it. I am now looking to book another hotel in Cardiff and will definitely not stay at the Mercure Holland House again.

We stayed here for a night..We were able to check in early which was great...Check in was smooth but staff was not friendly. The hotel is not far from city centre is all walkable distance.Lucky got room on high floor as what i had requested...The room was amazing with king size comfortable bed and lovely Cardiff view..The only negative part is the bathroom were not cleaned properly as walk in shower had some mould on it..Also the desk and table was so dusty..Hotel has lots of facility from gym, swimming pool, spa, restaurants and bar but was unable to use any of those because of short stay,,however we will in our next visit.

Room Tip: high floor better view

Positives; This hotel is in a ideal position in the centre of Cardiff. Easy access to shops and restaurants on foot and just around the corner of the castle. The rooms are large and well appointed. The beds are king size and very comfortable. The staff were helpful at all times of the day.
Negatives; Entrance to underground car park is very tight, be carefull if you drive a large car or 4x4, roof clearance only 1.8 metres. Internet; I really do not understand hotels in this day and age who still want to charge for wifi, here they charge £9 per night.
Large screen TV in the bar with circular seating around it. All of the tops of the leatherette seating had their top layer torn away leaving a dirty lower layer. Disapointing and easily soved as it let down the rest of the room.

I stayed here for a night when in Cardiff for a cricket match. I've had good experiences with Mercure in the past and this was no exception. The room, on a high floor, had excellent views. It was also much more spacious than I have found in more expensive hotels, and decorated in a tasteful style. The bathroom was sizable too. The bed was comfortable though the one letdown was that it had not been made up perfectly (as a result it did not feel like a freshly made bed, even though it was). I had to get away early so did not order a breakfast. The hotel is located slightly away from the centre of Cardiff (east of centre), an easy 10-15 minutes walk, or 20-25 minutes from the railway station. I was happy with that, it guaranteed it would be quieter than staying right in the middle of town. Overall, very good value for the price I got.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with views

We stayed at the hotel in late Sept to celebrate a friends birthday and were very effieciently allocated bedrooms next to each other on teh 14th floor. I must say the bedrooms, in room facilities and the view were great. The reception staff are good & helpful, although a bit short staffed at times.
However there are no service standards when it comes to the restaurant. We were told the hotel was fully booked for the weekend, however we could not see any staff serving in the breakfast room. No body replenishing the breakfast at all, no body serving the guests. The hotel needs to start working on its serving standards and especially restaurant and bar.

One must visit the red dragon centre for good restaurants and the cardiff bay for a fun motor boat trip.

Room Tip: Try to get high floors, especially 10 and above to get a great view of the city from the beautiful...

It's by far the best in Cardiff for Value and standards. I've stayed on many occassions and never been dissapointed. Good central location with a very good breakfast offer. Drinks at the bar can by slightly expensive. It comes highly recommended.

Room Tip: Further floors up the better less traffic noise
