I agree with most of the other comments about the hotel. Helpful staff, great location, generally very clean and a great view from the 14th floor. Breakfast was very good with a great choice and good service (mostly self service though). The one poor area was the restaurant for dinner. Bar prices are very high and the waiters spoiled what could have been a pleasant meal. The food was quite good and a reasonable choice but our order was not taken down properly and the wrong main course served. The steamed pudding ordered for dessert was served uncooked but on a very hot plate - how do they manage that? We ate out on the other evenings (take a taxi to Mermaid Quay).

We were here for two nights and we enjoyed them immensely. Location is excellent, the rooms (we were on the 14th floor) are excellent with fantastic views across the city to Cardiff Bay in one direction and the mountains in the other. The staff were immensely helpful -- nothing was too much trouble. It's a gem. If you're staying Sunday night, you need to know that the restaurant is closed, but there are good meals in the bar.

I've stayed here a few times. The hotel used to be an office block and still has a bit of a look & feel of one. The benefit is that there is plenty of space in the public areas and every room has a huge expanse of windows. The rooms all have a nice bathroom with separate bath tub & shower. Unfortunately the room I stayed in had not been refurbished and is starting to show signs of age - the bathroom was looking a bit grubby, the walls & furniture are marked. On the plus side, the room rate (booking direct with the hotel's website) was the cheapest yet with breakfast included. Staff were very efficient and friendly.

There is secure parking in the basement (£12 for 24hrs) with the entrance hidden round the back of the building. You can catch a train to Cardiff Bay from the station 5 mins walk from the hotel - trains every 12 mins (until midnight), journey takes 4mins!

This hotel is still a good option if the rates are good.

Very nice hotel and excellent spacious room overlooking Cardiff. Lovely big windows with great view but needed cleaning. King bed spacious. Beautiful bathroom. Spa facilities disappointing. If you want a massage book before you get there as they could not fit me in over the four days that I was staying. Minor point but teabags and biscuits not replaced each day. Also poor choice of tv channels!

To get to Cardiff Bay catch the train at Queen's station on Station road. Only £1.80 return. Parked at local multistorey which was £25 for 3 days.

The hotel isn't very pretty from the outside but seeing as there are no boutique hotel options in Cardiff we settled for the Mercure as previous reviews on this site mentioned the views. We asked for a room as high up as possible and we were very surprised that our standard room was so big. 1403 is located on the front left hand side corner on the 14th floor and the floor to ceiling windows gave us 180 panoramic views across Cardiff, you could even see the English shoreline!

Top tip - if you can be bothered to top up the pay and display every 10 hours (free after 6pm - charges start at 8am Mon-Sat and 10am on Sunday) you will save a packet. We paid £3 for every 10 hours...£9 from Sat - Mon whereas the hotel will charge you £12 a day/night, so we would have had to pay £36. Take the turning to the left of the hotel and park in the long stay parking bays.
The room was quite tired and the cleaner had not made much effort to make the bed very well and they only give you one flapjack with the teas and coffees which is a bit stingy! Our shower was freezing cold but once reported to reception it turned out the dial was back to front, so cold was hot and vice versa. A really nice touch is the radio/tape player which has speakers in the bathroom (amazing acoustics!). For £90 a night the size of the room was very good value. We had breakfast in the room one morning which was £16 each we seemed too expensive.

Very well located, just 5 mins walk to the shopping areas and CIA.
We didn't have time to try and pool and spa.
