Being a part of this is educating the public about alcohol and how to enjoy it in ways never thought of. Of course it's not all about cocktails; you will have to call in for the rest of the alcohol family"

“Kitsch & quirky tiki bar on Mill Lane”
Reviewed 16 October 2012

My friends and I were out in Cardiff on Saturday evening and deliberating where to go for drinks after our meal at Wagamama. We decided to give Kapu a try, as it's a new bar on Mill Lane. I advise to go there early on a Saturday night so that you can get a table. Front of house was friendly & welcoming and took us to a table and provided more chairs to accommodate our party of 8. Table service all night, which is a nice touch so that you don't have to negotiate the busy bar yourself. It's a small bar, so gets packed out easily.

I can see that Kapu has tried to create a Cardiff version of a mix between London's Mahiki and Trailer Happiness, but it feels a bit tacky rather than cool. That said, it is offering something new and different to Cardiff night life. Their cocktail selection is fun and served in tiki cups; we tried a zombie which was pretty tasty and came served set alight, which makes for some cool photo opportunities! They also have various reasonably priced sharing cocktails; we enjoyed the Wealthy Traveller. We then decided to treat ourselves to their signature cocktail the Treasure Chest, which serves 8. It's blatantly nicked from London's Mahiki, but who cares, it's a pretty cool thing to treat yourselves too! The presentation of the Treasure Chest, how it is brought to your table and served is awesome. Fair play, it was pretty strong too, I recommend it!

The ambiance of the bar was nice and chilled earlier on in the evening, but when it started to fill up, a DJ started playing with a live drummer accompaniment, which was loud and livened up the atmosphere. The clientele of this place on a Saturday night is typical Mill Lane, full of orange posers taking themselves a bit too seriously. I would definitely visit Kapu again, but probably avoid it at the weekends, unless I was getting there early to secure a table.

“Poor atmosphere, service, effort and portions”
Reviewed 21 September 2012

Having frequented many of the restaurants in the area we decided to try something new. This turned out to be a mistake. Many of the meals on the menu (a whole section) were no longer available, the service was poor at best (the staff clearly required training), we waited well over an hour for our food in a quiet restaurant. Admittedly we were told this was due to a problem with their electronic ordering system, but it took them the most part of an hour to realise this and the situation was dealt with poorly - with us being told repeatedly that the food would be 5/10 more minutes and 5 minutes after being told our food was plated I was even asked which meal I had ordered - the one with, or without ham? The manager did majorly reduce our bill, but unfortunately the way the situation was dealt with was awful and I would not return here again if you paid me. (oh, and we were still hungry after we finally ate because the portions were tiny, the cocktails were bland and the atmosphere was confused). Sorry Kapu, but you really need to try harder.
