Description: The Clink Restaurant at HMP Cardiff opened to the general public in September 2012 and offers over 30 category D prisoners from HMP Prescoed and HMP Cardiff full-time work within the 96 cover restaurant and kitchen. Prisoners train towards gaining nationally recognised City & Guilds NVQ qualifications before returning to their retrospective prisons at the end of the working day. Upon their release, The Clink Charity helps graduates find employment within the Welsh catering and hospitality industry. The restaurant is a flagship example of a unique charitable project that is committed to reducing reoffending rates throughout Wales in partnership with HMPS. The restaurant positively promotes the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners and also champions the wealth of quality, fresh and organic produce available throughout Wales. Seasonal food is prepared and cooked in an open plan kitchen enabling diners the opportunity to watch food preparation. The restaurant has recently added Sunday dining times, opening its doors every Sunday, 12:00pm to 3:00pm, serving roast lunches with 2 courses for £19.95 and 3 courses for £25.90. The restaurant also serves dinner from Wednesday to Saturday at 6:30pm, 7pm & 7:30pm, offering a 4-course menu for £39.95. Afternoon Tea is available between 12pm and 3pm from Monday to Saturday. Available for exclusive hire, The Clink Restaurant boasts private dinings room that offers projector and AV facilities making it perfect for meetings, conferences and presentations.

“Delicious food, excellent service - well worth a visit!”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

The Clink, Cardiff is a great dining experience and a really worthwhile cause. Inmates cook and serve very high quality restaurant food in great surroundings. We have visited other Clink Restaurants before and wanted to take our children to The Clink, Cardiff. When we told our son we were dining in a prison he looked a bit anxious, but was amazed and impressed when we walked through the door! It doesn't look much from the outside but the interior is like a high class restaurant. The staff are very friendly and efficient and the menu offered a great choice of fresh seasonal ingredients. On arrival we were offered (non alcoholic) cocktails. My daughter and I had the most delicious, tender lamb and my husband's main course was equally delicious. Our son is quite a fussy eater and the chef was more than happy to cook a full Welsh Breakfast for him, which he really enjoyed. Puddings were really yummy. All in all, a fantastic lunch and great value too. Well worth a visit.

“A very worthwhile cause.”
Reviewed 12 August 2014 via mobile

I came here with my mother on the weekend and had such a great time. The head waiter was very welcoming and sat us straight away. Our waiter - Tony was attentive and friendly. The food was presented beautifully and tasted amazing. I believe this is such a worthwhile cause that gives people a second chance. I will definitely be coming back and recommending to all!

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed 8 August 2014 via mobile

We wanted to try this place for a few reasons
- the novelty/location
- the reviews we'd seen
- and also the charity work/aims of the restaurant.

My first comment is that as this is a charity project the website (understandably) is a little misleading & a lot of the information does not relate to the Cardiff prison location. No security checks are needed & you can just go without booking ( although recommended) for a light lunch or coffee.

Great decor & easy to find location. The menus are on a 3 weekly rotation (per season) with slight changes/variations depending on availability of ingredients etc.

We visited on a weekday lunchtime and must say the front of house staff were great, food was of good quality & surprisingly the standard would compare to that of a very good restaurant. The manager came to speak with us & as we showed an interest we learnt a lot about the work and aims of the charity and restaurant.

If your worried about the location then don't be the restaurant is located in the old visitors centre at the entrance to the site & not in the prison itself.

If your concerned about the 'staff' there's no need to be. All the staff are undertaking recognised training & are building skills/careers once released, and lots of security checks are undertaken. Ask lots of question when you visit.

There's no alcohol on offer due to licensing restrictions but plenty of soft drink options.

The presentation of food and the care taken in making it was evident as it's an open kitchen you can see the kitchen working. We felt the mains were the highlight of the menu & possibly would just go for the 1 course next time.

Very accessible for wheelchairs & can even accommodate private parties/groups. They don't accept tips but you can make donations to the charity in lieu.
