Beautifully fresh food, large selection, plenty to choose from even if you're not a fan of fish. Good value and right in the heart of Cardiff bay. We will be back again soon

We have been here twice now. Each time was a wonderful experience. There is a sorry lack of Japanse restaurants in Cardiff (big chains like Yo Sushi and Wagamama not counting), so when this place opened it was a very welcome sight!

The food is here is delicious. Especially the ramen (so much better than Wagamama!). The sushi is excellent and beautifully presented, and the gyoza is perfect.

Also the staff are always very friendly, chatting and informal.

The prices are comparable to similar places. Bit too expensive to eat here regularly, but definitely worth going to an occasional treat!

highly recommended!

Our first visit to this restaurant and for some of the group first experience of Japanese cuisine. Sunday lunchtime as a change and we were very happy to have made that decision. Food, service, drinks all very good. The meals were well presented and the staff very willing to guide and help the novices ! Good to be able to see the chefs at work in a spotless kitchen. The two course lunch very good value at £10.95 a head although we did top up with sushi and sashimi which were excellent.

Beware if you are a massive fan of Japanese restaurants as I am. This place must only have got the ratings it has from the tourists. It's right in the middle of tourist central on the bay, though that shouldn't affect the cooking. I don't want to seem like a snotty Londoner and the staff were really lovely, but the food was absolutely dreadful. I couldn't actually eat the soft shell crab as it was so greasy with a thick, horrible, rancid batter. They had no chilled sake only one industrial hot variety which when I asked for chilled sake (as the Japanese often drink it) they simply put the heated sake in an ice bucket!!. When I went to the loo, the staff clothes and belongings were piled up in the corridor. The food was so bad I couldn't eat it and to be fair they didn't charge me for it. There was also really bad, loud musak playing throughout. I left and went to eat somewhere else.

Dear CaspiaPam

Thank you for your review.

I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your recent dining experience at Yakitori#1

We are committed to ensuring all our customers enjoy their dining experience at our restaurant. We use good quality ingredients to prepare our food. Our chicken is fresh Farm Assured and British and our fish is from sustainable sources.

Our chefs take a lot of care and attention in preparing great tasting food without the aid of artificial colourings and flavourings such as MSG (mono sodium glutamate) which is widely used in the restaurant industry.

I want to assure you that all the wonderful reviews we received are from satisfied customers who genuinely enjoyed the food and service they received at our restaurants - tourists and local alike.

Our front of house team members are empowered to offer a replacement or even not charge for a particular item if it is not to the customer's liking - that is our commitment.

When your server noticed you did not finish your starter and after having spoken with you she took the initiative to remove the item from your bill - even though I believed you did say at that time that 'it wasn't necessary'

The Sake we currently have in our menu is meant to be served warmed - as it is traditionally served in Japan for centuries. This I believed was pointed out to you by our bar server but apparently you still wanted it served chilled.

Not wanting to disappoint you the customer, he foolishly made what you later described as a poor attempt to chill your Sake. He should not have done so - firstly, that was not the proper way to chill any drink let alone a quality Sake and secondly, serving a warm drinking Sake chilled distorts the taste and flavour. We would not have charged you the £5.50 for your drink if we knew you did not enjoy it as well.

In order to give our customers more choice, we will be adding some good quality chilled drinking Sake to our new menu due for launch in the coming weeks.

Once again, thank you for your review and I am sorry you did not enjoy Yakitori#1

Very clean restaurant and friendly service. Duck sushi, spicy salmon sushi-cone-thing (can't remember what it was called), katsu curry, salmon teriyaki, and vegetable tempura were very good. Definitely would return as I love sushi and there aren't many sushi places in Cardiff.
