I used to think that visiting a cemetery was a little too macabre for my tastes, until I visited Cathays Cemetery that is. The gorgeous landscaping, quiet atmosphere, beautiful monuments make for a peaceful retreat from the city.

Weather was bad. Looking for an Ancestral grave. Map good but plot could not be identified not marked on the ground. Found what we were looking for but with more good luck than anything.

The third lastest cemetery in the UK... This is a wonderful place to visit.

The friends of the cemetery have a list of interesting/famous graves. Many interesting and heartwarming stories can be told here.

There is also a section which is left 'wild' as part of a nature conservation and it's wonderful to see the variety of life that flourishes in a place so linked with death.

The chapels which are under restoration are beautiful and show the burial practices of the time with the non-conformist and the catholic sections being separate.

A truely wonderful for history lovers and nature lovers alike.

The cemetery is quite large but has multiple entrances and exits so some people use it as a shortcut. We wanted to visit to look for unusual or extremely old graves. We were surprised to learn that there is a geocache in the cemetery. It's a multi-part one that takes you all over the cemetery searching for about 12 graves. It was very interesting!
