“best pie and mash in cardiff”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

If your fed up off going to pubs and paying a fortune for mediocre food you have to try the star inn,the food is all freshly cooked and the pie and mash is to die for,the staff and service was first class so friendly and welcoming, myself and my husband will be returning soon to try there Sunday lunch, the landlord informed me they also do great entertainment, so can't wait to get a few friends together for a night out,so glad we discovered this great little pub.

“Good old fashioned home cooking”

Came across this pub after taking our son back to Swansea uni and googled restaurants in the Cardiff area. Ditto the comments of previous reviewers. Well worth a visit.

“Star by name.................”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

My wife and I decided to have Easter weekend in Cardiff, and stayed in the Premier Inn in Castleton. On Good Friday we took the bus (No. 30, 3mins) to St Mellons and it stopped opposite The Star.
Our first port of call and we walked into the front, which was the restaurant. The chef looked the part but we didn't want a meal. No problem, out came the owner and lead us through the 'staff only' part to the lounge. Couples and 'mature singles' complimented the music playing.
Very friendly locals and very welcoming owners and staff, so much so that we booked to have Sunday Lunch.

Easter Sunday, and we arrived a little before 12:00. No problem, as said, Martin was open for business. Not only did we receive a very warm welcome from Martin and his wife butb we enjoyed 15-20 minutes of nice chat in a very cosy dining area (probanly about 18-20 covers, real wooden furniture and decorated with memorabila that will keep you occupied while you are waiting for your meal to be prepared.)
The chef looks the part, and his meals certainly look the part.

My wife and I are not gourmets but the way the meal was presented just gave us the confidence that the chef knew what he was doing. Our 'standard' turkey roast and beef roast came with green beans - bundled in a celery band - and 'hedgehog potatoes', potatoes semi-sliced and roasted (or was it sauted?). Plenty of gravy, but then out came the boats 'just in case you might want more'. The additional veg - beautifully cooked buttered and roasted carrots and white cabbage - was ample, and more than enough for us.

Very attentive service.
An absolute delight.

We don't live too far away and will definitely be returning in the not-too-distant future.
If you live close, or if you are travelling to West Wales and want to break the journey we can thoroughly recommend the Star, just 5-10 mins off the M4.
