Mercure Swansea
Ranked #14 of 22 Hotels in Swansea
Reviewed 6 May 2014

The Mercure Swansea is located in a business park not far from the city centre of Swansea. It is a fairly typical chain hotel with a large car park and plenty of grassy areas all around. Here are the main points:

Reception:
I was part of a group and they seemed to be well organised and everyone got their key cards quickly. Reception staff were always friendly and helpful when approached.

Room:
A reasonable size standard twin hotel room with a tv, hair dryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The room was very warm on entry and we discovered that someone had left the heater on, thankfully you can open the windows in this hotel. The bathroom was a reasonable size and nicely furnished. The shower over the bath was easy to use and quite powerful. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. The room was clean. My only complaint would be that the floorboards along the corridors on the second floor are very squeaky and also in the room the floorboards were squeaky. Others have also mentioned this and they do need to give it some attention.

Restaurant:
We ate in the restaurant on the first night as it was part of a deal and were offered a limited menu with three starters, three main courses and three desserts. Staff were friendly and attentive. The food was ok but my goujons of plaice were finger sized and looked like they were straight out of a packet. We ate out the second night. Breakfast is self service and offers a good choice of hot and cold food, all the basics you would expect are there. Staff serve you tea and coffee at the table.

They also have a small health centre with a small pool, maximum twelve people at any one time. There is a small bar and lounge area adjacent to reception.

Conclusion:
Reasonable rooms and comfy beds.
Staff seem friendly and attentive.
Restaurant food could be better but that is based on one meal only.
They need to do something about the squeaky floorboards.

I would be happy enough to stay here again, it is fine, average without being amazing.
If it was possible I would probably rate it at 3.5 but Trip Advisor do not have such a score option

As a business traveller I have stayed in the Mercure Swansea hotel since January this year.

I have never stayed in a hotel with a more pleasant staff. Everybody, without exception (the managers, restaurant staff and the cleaners) is cheerful and nothing is too much for them to ensure the stay is the best it can be.

The food was fantastic and our family room was clean and quiet. What made the stay was the great pool facilities and the attitude of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble, we are going again in May, can't wait! Fantastic service, home from home.

Our first ever trip to Swansea came courtesy of an Amazon Local sampler of 2-nights B&B plus dinner on the first night for £125 for 2 people.
We were very impressed with Swansea itself with its redeveloped marina and most impressive new-build housing surrounding same. We did all the touristy stuff (Gower Peninsular and Mumbles etc) and decided we would like to return, which, for us, is the whole object of the sampling exercise of the 2-night stays around the country. It gives us an idea of where we want to return to - and where we don’t.
We stayed at the Mercure Swansea Hotel on a retail park just outside the main City centre area. For just £20 a night extra, we upgraded to a Privilege Room and with all the extras (upgraded bathroom, coffee making machine, dressing gowns and slippers etc) which was well worth the money. The motel-style Hotel is a good 3-star hotel that with a little work and an eye to detail could possibly push for an extra star BUT its penchant for accepting coach parties means it will fall at the first fence. We had not one but FOUR coach parties of around an extra 100+ guests that tested both staff and facilities to the limit. Dining tables overflowed into the bar/reception area and all other residents had to wait until 7.45 pm before they could book a table for dinner. By the time it was our turn; several items on the menu were unavailable due to earlier demand. As a second choice, I had the pork belly. I returned it as it arrived, pale, flaccid and undercooked. I noticed it had been withdrawn from the menu the following night. It seemed the only sensible decision the hotel had made while we were there..
Meal times were an absolute bun fight but my wife and I are quick learners and on the second night, we voted with our feet and spent the £60 we would have spent in its restaurant elsewhere in Swansea. Surely this reverse marketing technique defeats the object of the exercise i.e. getting punters to spend more money on extras?
We have stayed in several Mercure Hotels (the best being in Wigan) but this was a great disappointment.
Will we return? Based on this experience - absolutely not. No doubt the Hotel’s GM will reply with platitudes endeavouring to defend the indefensible but the damage is already done. You can only make a good first impression once! With a bit a foresight, this debacle could have been avoided. I know coach parties are good business and keep the smoke going up the financial chimney but whoever took the questionable decision to take four of them at once should examine their motives.

Room Tip: An upgrade to a Privilege room is well worth the £20 a night supplement. A larger, well furnished ro...

Dear Ken S,

No defending of the indefensible from me: - Four coach parties is too many, and not something we would normally do, hence you won't find any other reviewer complaining of this issue. We normally take a maximum of two on the basis that one doesn't come off and we end up with one, but due to a mix up between our Groups department in Scotland and Accor's own groups department we ended up with 4 on this particular weekend and unfortuntely they all came off. In retrospect we should have tried to outbook one to another local hotel or simply not sold the remaining 10 rooms, though not selling vacant rooms in the current financial climate is not a decision that woukd be popular upstairs. I would be more than happy to offer you a free nights stay inclusive of dinner, bed and breakfast for you and your wife if you are planning to travel this way again, as some tangible form of recompense and can assure you that you will not experience this tour group situation again.

Thanks for taking the time to review our hotel, and for giving us 3 stars as I could fully understand under the circumtsances if you had awarded us a lower score.

Best regards

I work in Swansea but live in Somerset so choose to stay over a couple of nights a week to save the long commute - having done this for some 18 months, and having tried a number of others, I choose to stay at the Mercure Swansea - I've never found the Staff to be anything but warm and friendly - the hotel itself welcoming and comfortable - the food always a high standard and the whole package very reasonably priced

Dear Tim Q,

Many thanks for your kind review, and great to hear that after 18 months you are stil enjoying staying at the hotel. Restores the teams faith after a couple of poor reviews centered more around noise created by other guests on one weekend than the quality of food, service and accomodation we offer.

Many thanks, once again and we look forward to contnuing to look after you during your weekly visits for the foreseeable future.

We stayed here for work and I had to bring my dog along, they were fine with this at an extra £10 which is fine!

The room was very spacious and nice colour scheme, you get a bit more than a premier inn where I usually stay for work. and it's cheaper!!!

The bed was so comfy and the shower great!

We didn't eat here but enu looked good and had a nice bar area.

It's right by the retail parks and footie ground, also if you venture out the front and walk 2 ins there's a lake behind which is nice.

A group of 10 we went for a carvery meal at the mercure in swansea, the staff were very helpful as we had 2 wheelchair users. The carvery itself was excellent and hot...service was excellent we also had a choice of delicious deserts.....with coffee or tea afterwards. We didn't feel pressurised to leave the table when we had finished.
