“Good waterfront hotel”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

A very pleasant hotel to stay at. Easy to find and with plenty of parking. The staff are friendly and helpful. The bar area is a shade small but consequently a little crowded when I was last there. Breakfast was very good and the restaurant is very light and pleasant to eat in. Bedrooms are the usual comfortable Mercure standard which is reliable but not exceptional.
I prefer the Mercure over other hotels in Swansea and would recommend it.

Dear Nige,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

Great to hear that like manyregulars 'in the know' you prefer to stay with us than any other hotel in Swansea, and I shall pass on your feedback to the team.

NB - To any readers of this review we do a have a scenic lake to the rear of the hotel, but I personally wouldn't describe us a as ''Waterfront Hotel' as that to me says seafront. Just so you are aware that the' Waterfront Hotel' title is a guest decription, and not how we describe ourselves.

Best regards

It was my first time in Swansea and i chose the Mercure because i stayed in the one in bristol and cardiff.. To my surprise the Swansea Mercure fell very short of my expectation. It looks nice on the outside but it needs a lot of renovation inside.. The noise while walking in the corridor is quite disturbing. The room was really basic for the price i paid. Ive seen so much better for much cheaper! There was no air conditionning but a table fan under the table. Very disappointing!
Breakfast was just ok. Full english buffet and some cereals n pastries.. Nothing really exciting. I ate the same thing twice for lack of choice. The menu in the evening is extremely limited. I would have preferred eating out but i realised while driving there that the hotel is in a "remote" area.. Nothing around really apart from businesses..

The premier inn i recently visited is way better..
I wouldn't go back there if i was to visit Swansea again...

Dear Reviewer,

Sorry to hear that you were not fully satisfied with your stay. We are audited by Mercure annually to meet all brand standards, and needless to say we tick all the boxes required. With regard to having nothing to do in the local area, we have a beautiful lake behind the hotel (pictures on our wensite), plus miles of woodland cycle paths and riverside walks within 10 minutes of the hotel.

Thank you for your feedback, and I shall pass on your comments with regard to the property issues you raised.

Best regards

We stayed here for work in the Swansea area. Staff are lovely, as were the cooked breakfasts but we only ate in the hotel one night as it was expensive (£22 for a set 3 course) for average quality food. We went for this as thought it sounded good value but we had mediocre carvery and a custard pie for dessert which we were told was lemon meringue pie! We ate in the nearby Sizzling pub which was slightly better food and much cheaper drinks.
The rooms were comfy enough, (floorboards a bit creaky) I had to ask for softer pillows and as it was warm that week, and I had to leave the windows open, there is a fair bit of traffic noise at the front of the hotel.
we used the small pool once which was lovely and warm and the patio area and walk around the lake is very pleasant! NB there is no lift so luggage has to be carried upstairs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back or side away from road.

The facilities, rooms and meals were pretty much as you would expect from a large 'chain' hotel. However what really sets the Mercure Swansea apart from other hotels is the service. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. What I particularly liked is that most of them had lived in the local area for most of their lives and so were incredibly knowledgeable about local points of interest and were keen to share their knowledge and offer useful advice regarding the best places to visit etc.

Dear Cath L,

Many thanks for your review. We have a great team here and yes 95% of them are local to the area, and they have a good knowledge of beaches, walks, where to park, where to shop etc etc which is invaluable to our guests.

I shall pass on your kind comments to the team, and thanks for taking the time to review us.

I have stayed at the Mercure Swansea on several occasions and have always had a pleasant stay and never disappointed. The staff here are all friendly and helpful, nothing is too much for them. Location although situated in a business park is quiet and the hotel is close to the city centre with easy access to the surrounding areas and attractions.

Hotel and staff pleasant enough but hard pillows (hence poor nights sleep), dirty loo on arrival, tired paintwork in room and poor vegetarian choice (2 dishes of which one was pizza!). Not value for money

Dear Paul 5368,

Many thanks for taking the time to review the hotel. The pillows are new, (2 months old) no other bad feedack yet, but will monitor situation. We do have alternative feather pillow and had you let us know we could have replaced in an insant.

With regard to the loo, we spot check 20 rooms a day and the loos are pretty well always spotless. As you didn't raise this at the time I cannot investigate what went wrong here, other than to apologise and assure you we will re double our efforts on room checks.

Best regards

The Mercure Swansea is located in a business park not far from the city centre of Swansea. It is a fairly typical chain hotel with a large car park and plenty of grassy areas all around. Here are the main points:

Reception:
I was part of a group and they seemed to be well organised and everyone got their key cards quickly. Reception staff were always friendly and helpful when approached.

Room:
A reasonable size standard twin hotel room with a tv, hair dryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The room was very warm on entry and we discovered that someone had left the heater on, thankfully you can open the windows in this hotel. The bathroom was a reasonable size and nicely furnished. The shower over the bath was easy to use and quite powerful. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. The room was clean. My only complaint would be that the floorboards along the corridors on the second floor are very squeaky and also in the room the floorboards were squeaky. Others have also mentioned this and they do need to give it some attention.

Restaurant:
We ate in the restaurant on the first night as it was part of a deal and were offered a limited menu with three starters, three main courses and three desserts. Staff were friendly and attentive. The food was ok but my goujons of plaice were finger sized and looked like they were straight out of a packet. We ate out the second night. Breakfast is self service and offers a good choice of hot and cold food, all the basics you would expect are there. Staff serve you tea and coffee at the table.

They also have a small health centre with a small pool, maximum twelve people at any one time. There is a small bar and lounge area adjacent to reception.

Conclusion:
Reasonable rooms and comfy beds.
Staff seem friendly and attentive.
Restaurant food could be better but that is based on one meal only.
They need to do something about the squeaky floorboards.

I would be happy enough to stay here again, it is fine, average without being amazing.
If it was possible I would probably rate it at 3.5 but Trip Advisor do not have such a score option
