“Excellent free visit!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2014 via mobile

Went there with my.husband yesterday and it was a good couple of hours! Free to visit and with both good displays and informative voluntary staff it was a good visit. You are supplied with torches to have better look at some of the exhibits. It may be a little boring for young children but a good place to visit for the 'older generation' lol.We finished the visit with a snack and coffee in the university cafe outside the museum. Which is reasonable and also highly recommended!

“Much prefer this to the national museum in Cairo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2014

This centre is great. The national museum in Cairo is huge by comparison, yet the Swansea University's centre is much more interesting and educational. We recently spend half a day walking round the centre and could have stayed longer. Also, the volunteers are so eager to impart their knowledge. Cairo - no thanks, I'll go back to the Egypt centre in Swansea any day.

“Amazing Egyptian History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

The museum is located at the Swansea University Campus off Mumbles Road. Easily accessible via bus from the City Centre. Prior to visiting, use the On line Egyptian Centre Website with information available on the collection. The Museum is near the Taeliesin Theatre on the Campus. There is limited parking pay and display near the University Entrance but most parking is taken pretty early. The location is ideal because you can link it with a visit to the Boating Lake, Singleton Park and the Promenade of Swansea Bay. There is also a cafe/ restaurant as part of the Taeliesin complex. The Egyptian Centre is free, but I would phone prior to a visit as it seems very popular with schools, which potentially limits access to the collection. The schoolchildren, I saw were evidently loving their visit with the opportunity to handle certain items, practice mummification on a dummy, build a pyramid, dressing in costumes under the guidance of volunteer guides who were as enthusiastic as the children. I found the staff to be very helpful, and to protect the collection of over 5000 items, some over a million years old,the lighting is reduced and you are provided with a torch. You can take photos but must not use flash. I have an interest in history, but did not know much about Egyptian history, but this collection with it's guides, information boards and varied collection definitely will result in a return visit and further reading. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm. I can imagine it can get busy during school holidays, but well worth a visit.

It's free and if you have young kids they will love it. The staff are very knowledgeable and great with children esp. Making the mummy. Good exhibits bust best of all apart from free was the children enjoying the staff explaining the objects

“Fascinating little gem of a place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2013

Well for a start its free, which is good, but even better its really interesting and staffed by passionately keen volunteers who will tell you about the exhibits and even mummify a dummy before your very eyes! Well worth a family visit.
