The views and gardens are lovely but that's about it. I was pretty confused walking around and most other guests seemed in the same boat. No coffee shop just an outside catering van that just did instant coffee. This could be a lovely place but it's boring and depressing.

Our visit to Belfast Castle was a mixed experience. While the stunning gardens and the presence of the resident castle cat added some charm to the visit, we found the overall castle to be somewhat disappointing. Rather than a traditional historic castle, this was more a visitor centre and banquet hall.

The gardens surrounding the castle were indeed beautiful, offering picturesque views of the city and providing a serene atmosphere for a leisurely stroll.

One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the castle cat, who added a playful and endearing touch to the experience. It is said that good fortune will come to those visiting Belfast Castle as long as the tradition of the castle cat is kept. The tradition dates back to the castle's history, where there has always been a resident white cat. The gardens below celebrate this tale with nine references made to the cat in paving sculpture and garden furniture.

Impressive castle. It’s about 20 mins by bus from the city centre (it opens at 9 and at this time there might be school traffic). You can ask the bus drivers as they’re very friendly and helpful in telling you when to get off! When you get off the bus the castle is well sign posted and it’s up a hill. There isn’t much to see inside (only the ground floor rooms and a small visitor exhibition on the ground floor) as it is now owned by the council and used largely for functions. There isn’t much in the rooms to tell you anything about the castle but it was built in 1880s after the previous castle burned down. The gardens are nice and on a clear day would offer nice views of the city (when we visited it was a bit cloudy). We’re pleased we visited though - the cafe isn’t open everyday but there is a cafe near the bus stop where you get the bus back into the city that you can visit.
It won’t take you long to visit and you’ll want to plan your day to maybe visit the zoo or Crumlin Gaol which are nearby or reached by a short bus ride.

Random visit on a sunny Tuesday morning in January enticed by the cafe advertised in one of the car parks. Enjoyable walk around the gardens which are nicely kept. Entered the castle, there’s no welcome (even from the lady typing away furiously at one of the desks). Only the first floor appeared to be open. Asked for directions to the cafe and it’s closed on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Recommend that the powers that be update their advertising. Disappointing.
