A nice reminder of the past in the bustling Botanic area.
Well kept and worth a look for the 'cannibal plant' as well!

I love this place. it is mad!
A tropical ravine in the middle of Belfast! Well worth a visit. Onlly takes 10 minutes to walk round and then you can visit the Museum of dander around the Botanic Gardens. make the effort, you will enjoy it.

“Pleasant victorian tropical house with great potential”
Reviewed 10 February 2014

A hidden gem next door to the Ulster Museum, the Tropical Ravine House is a free pleasant attraction in Belfast. Entering through a door, you find yourself suspended above a forest of tropical leaves and plants on a platform that runs through two separate rooms and around the edge of the building. The fish ponds at the rear of the house are home to many delightful fish and the rich tropical greenery present showcases many tropical plants the public would not normally have chance to see.

The fact it is free and right next to an existing family orientated attraction gives you all the reason to bring your friends and children here to marvel at this house’s array of tropical plants. It is a good contrast to the museum’s exhibitions and good either as a starter before going into the museum or afterwards to unwind and relax just before leaving to go home.

I feel there is untapped potential here. The building does need renovation work which I hope will come shortly. Below on the ground of the house you can see paved paths running back and forth. If these could be opened, then visitors could walk down amongst the plants and feel like they are in a jungle. There is the concern of damp and slipping, which could be countered by installing new steps leading down to the floor and railings to provide support. A member of staff could be allocated as well to provide assistance as well. If the floor could be opened it would double the viewing space of the house. Hopefully Belfast city will realise that such attractions as the ravine house adds much to the appeal of the city and will invest in both modernising the building and allowing these small changes mentioned above to expand its existing abilities.

“Lovely piece of Victoriana”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Quaint and quirky "giant greenhouse" with elevated pathway around central mass of interesting tropical vegetation and fish ponds. Very tranquil and calming. Magnificent piece of Victoriana too. Could do with a bit of TLC from "the powers that be"- it would be a shame to see it deteriorate further. With jammy dodgers priced at a pound each in the adjacent museum surely there is a bit of spare change left for a splash of paint and a few bits of glass to fix the roof?
