Having had a recent bad culinary experience at one of the growing number of curry stops in Northern Ireland using sugar as the base ingredient apparently in an effort to "accommodate and provide for the demands and palettes of our customers" in the words of the Public Relations Manager of the offending restaurant I ventured, with guests, to Indie Spice with some apprehension. It would be hard to fault this gem - this diamond- of Indian cuisine. Jokingly we asked the waiter to go easy on the sugar and he responded politely but firmly that they don't use sugar in their cooking. What we encountered was an exhilarating taste experience as we shared our choices of Chicken Bhuna, Chicken Dansak and Lamb Rogan Josh each with its distinctive flavours and freshly prepared. The meats were succulent and tender. Chapatis were not on the menu so we ordered roti’s – perfectly cooked. Pilau rice comes with each dish and included in the price. I ordered a side of chana dal which was not on the menu but they offered the dish without hesitation. The starters of pakora, somosa, Murgh Chaat (chicken chat) and tandoori mixed were excellent. Wonderful aromas and tantalising blends of spices. Charming, welcoming and super efficient staff who when asking if you were enjoying your meal really meant it and took time to answer questions and discuss the menu.
Fantastic experience. What a treasure!
Anyone whose palette needs “to be accommodated” should bring their own sugar.

Many times when I look at, for instance, world class gymnasts or ice skating champions, I wonder how the judges can possibly pick a winner when they are all so good and all are offering similar routines. Of course, one of them has that little bit extra. And so it goes for Indian restaurants. Ubiquitous in their profusion throughout the land and all the same. No. The occasional one has "that little bit extra". In this instance, it's Indie Spice in Stranmillis. I have travelled extensively in India on many occasions and have a reasonable idea of what constitutes decent Indian fare. This place has it. So. Excellent food, a strangely eclectic decoration scheme and a very attentive and friendly staff, all go to create a fine mix; leaving a post-prandial glow of satisfaction. What more could a diner want?
