“Friendly hotel needing a little improvement”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2012

The Malmaison is a stylish hotel in central Belfast. It’s typical of the Mal chain – dark, moody and with attitude. On the whole, this is a good place to stay, but the hotel is a little tired around the edges and needs some attention. Also, I suspect that the Mal brand is a not quite so cutting edge these days and they need to freshen up generally. The lack of aircon is also just an issue that needs fixing – quite annoying on a hot night in Belfast.

Apart from that, the beds are super comfy, great shower and the breakfast was delicious. Also, the staff were really friendly. So, there is certainly more right about this hotel than wrong, and it’s in a good part of town for eating out and experiencing Belfast.

Give it a go, but don’t expect perfection.

Stayed on the first floor in a room which caught the afternoon and evening sun and consequently was unbearably hot as there was no aircon and the window could only be opened 10cm (health and safety i presume)The room overlooked one of Belfast's main thoroughfares and the bar smoking area so noise was also an issue. Consequently a really poor nights sleep. The bar area is very tired , furniture stained etc and in need of a refurb. Room was clean but rather pokey. Food and waiting staff good.

Room Tip: Stay in the nearby Merchant Hotel!

It is like the hotel in run by 2 different companies, outside it looks like a lovely hotel set in a listed building, food is very good, service is excellent.

Go up stairs to the rooms and a very different story! Rock hard cheap beds, very stuffy rooms, air con not working, very noisey, mould in the bathroom and just an over all feeling of being very run down.

I booked the deluxe room on first floor.

We stayed here Saturday and we upgraded to a suite 300euro. The suite was stunning but that was as far as it went. we went to bed with the air con on and had to get up middle of night to turn off as it was so loud we could not sleep. Room ended up so hot. Then we awake at 5.00am as the automatic blinds over the velux windows literally over the bed did not work so room was too bright to sleep.
I complained and all i was offered was 40 refund. This not satisfactory for getting no sleep in a 300euro room. we very disappointed with hotels response. Will not be returning there due to this which is a pity as we stayed there a few times and had previously enjoyed it. Will stay somewhere else.

Stayed here mid week in July as a girls get-away. Great location easily accessible by foot to the centre of town and attractions. Reception staff especially Peter very helpful and charming, check in was brisk. Agree with many other reviews that the rooms during summer are very hot but as Belfast is not known for its balmy weather would say this problem is on encountered a few weeks a year!
Highlight for us was definitely the breakfast that was included in the cost of our room. Travelling for a living means I have a fair lot of experience with hotel breakfast buffets and this one was truly fantastic!!! Had the eggs benedict along with the other delights on offer and have to say they were the best I have EVER had!!! All in all found this to be a great little place for those looking for something a little trendy and upmarket. Would definitely return even if only for the breakfast!

Stayed for three nights at the start of August with my partner. Very genuinely friendly reception staff on arrival. In fact the service level overall was very good and there was a genuinely friendly attitude from the majority of the staff we met. The reception and night security staff deserve a special mention though. Standard room finished to a good standard with free wifi. Very comfy bed! The room was a bit warm the first night but, mainly due to the weather, was fine the rest of the stay. I could imagine in hot weather it could be a real problem. They could probably usefully do with fitting some small in room a/c units. Breakfast was good, a little limited in the buffet/juices selection maybe but good, and again prompt, friendly and efficient service. Overall a great stay. Would certainly go back, as long as the weather wasn't too warm!

I stayed at the boutique hotel on an overnight, bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. The staff were very helpful and the food good. The hotel itself was disappointing in that it was well worn with very dark interiors. Our bedroom was incredibly hot and on asking about air conditioning we were advised that there was none due to the listed building status of the building. A fan was provided but was noisy to use. If the hotel was averagely priced I would have found it acceptable but having stayed in other hotels of similar price the standard was not in line with price asked. I don't think I would stay again.

Room Tip: No air conditioning in any of the rooms.
