Description: Holohan's is a family owned Irish restaurant situated on the Belfast Barge and permanently moored beside the Waterfront theatre and Queens Bridge in the heart of Belfast City. Holohan's unusual and picturesque setting is the perfect accompaniment to the unique dining experience, based around great Irish produce, recipes and warm, genuine Irish hospitality. Using classic recipes, updated with modern cooking techniques and some of the best local ingredients, the chefs at Holohan's produce food that is both nostalgic and contemporary. There is also a real focus on locally sourced craft beer, ale and cider, and a great selection of some unusual Irish whiskey's. As a family Holohan's has valued their gift for hospitality through three generations, the current owners grandmother, Sabina Holohan , encouraged the family to welcome guests "as if it were visiting your home." With modern life accelerating at such a fast pace, we often forget that the most important part of hospitality is to be hospitable, something for which the Irish have been renowned the world over. While there is an informal and relaxed ambience at Holohan's, the staff is nevertheless consummately professional, with a fantastic knowledge of our food, drinks and provenance. The Irish have a rich and wonderful culinary heritage, our extensive research has gathered a wealth of cooking methods, recipes and techniques from the last three hundred years. Many of the dishes on our menu have a weight of history behind them and have been passed on down through the generations. From the peasant food of the North West born out of hardship and necessity which gave us dishes like Craibechan, a delicious savory porridge made from pearl Barley and of course the house specialty, BOXTY, which comes from the traditional word bacstai or aran bocht ti meaning 'poor house bread'. Boxty on the griddle, And Boxty on the pan; The wee one in the middle Is for Mary Ann.[ Our goals are to provide and champion our particular brand of food and service in a relaxed and visually striking setting. While we celebrate Irish culture, we try to do so without resorting to Irish cliches, we feel the "Irish-ness" comes from the welcome, the hospitality and the wealth of history contained within our menu. At Holohan's, we aim to work in a transparent and ethical manner, ranging from the treatment of the animals that provide our meat, to sourcing sustainable fish and using seasonal, locally grown fruit and vegetables. Fast becoming known around the world for the quality of our produce, our little Island is becoming known as the larder of Europe, and what better way to demonstrate and celebrate this then using Irish produce to cook Irish food. Holohan's is the perfect place to enjoy this resurgence in Irish cuisine, and more than just food, we aim to give a good night out! We hope to see you soon, Holohan's at the Barge

Went to Holohans on the Belfast Barge for lunch, and the staff were really great in giving opinions on the food.

The Irish Stew is alittle unconventional but it is cooked absolutely beautifully. We will definitely going back to try the dinner menu.

Small group of us visited for a birthday. Kurt, Roy and the rest of the staff couldn't have been more helpful or welcoming.

The food was great from starters (ham hock terrine was great) through to the mains (steak was lush as was the sea bass either with or without the head and tail).

For dessert we had a sampling of different whiskeys and even some poitin.

Would highly recommend it (though try to book in advance as the venue is compact in terms of seats).

We went to the Belfast barge for the first time last night and all six of us really enjoyed our meals. The menu wasn't extensive but the food was delicious based on more traditional dishes but with a twist. I thought the staff very friendly and helpful, service was unobtrusive but attentive. All round it was a great night and I will be going again when I'm in Belfast and I will be recommending it to all my friends.

Our first trip to Belfast City and Holohan's was on our list. Friendly welcome from Derek and he made us feel at home instantly. Food was delicious and service very good. Calvin finished off our meal with a great barista style coffee and informative chat on places to visit in the evening.

This place is so good I actually had to come back the next day with the my friend to try the rest of the menu! The first night I went down with my family and from the moment we walked in we wee greeted with smiling faces from all the wait staff.

For our meal we had the dexter corned beef terrine and the scallops (which were cooked to perfection and to die for) and then we had the dexter t bone, monkfish with braised ox cheek and the whole sea bass with crunchy fennel salad. Every single mouthful was a dream and our plates were nearly licked clean by the end. We had our wines recommends for us the whole way through the meal with no need to even look at the menu! The information and knowledge the front of house staff have is out of this world!
Even though we were stuffed by the very reasonable potions (no pretentious portions here!) we squeezed in dessert and we were glad we did, we also got a taste of the mead to go with our desserts which was divine!

To end and amazing night we finished on cocktails recommended again by the wait staff. I had the espresso martini which has an Irish twist, using Irish whiskey instead of vodka and it was soooo much better than the original!

Basically if you don't get down to this place you are mad, best food, best price, quality and quantity in Belfast! One of the best things about it is it's ambiance and laid back service style by the family who run it! Wether it be a family or friend affair or just a nice meal with the other half this defiantly the place to go! And it's on a boat!! Brilliant!
