“Birthday Treat”
Reviewed 12 May 2012

Wow!!!!!!!!!!! Stayed in The Merchant 5 years ok when it was just the old Ulster Bank building and loved it, i thought they wouldnt be able to improve it by extending it but i was wrong. They have managed to mix the beautiful old building and the modern extension seamlessly. My husband and i were there to celebrate my 40th birthday, and really enjoyed our stay. The staff are very professional but still manage to be friendly and approachable. Only compliant was our breakfast was slightly spoiled as we felt neglected, you cant help but be bowled over by the fantasic "Great Room" where breakfast is served, and although when we first arrived we were seated and order taken very quickly, but after that we had to repeatly ask for things and in the end gave up and left without ever getting our requests. Perhaps they were just a bit short staffed that morning so i would not let this part of our stay lessen what was a magnificant experience.

This by far is one of my favourite hotels! It has excellent service, with delicious food and elegant rooms. The Rolls Royce, at a very small extra charge, makes your stay memorable! I would recommend this for the romantic, stylish couple with a bit of money to spend.

This is a wonderful hotel primarily because of the employees who unabashedly and successfully seek to satisfy their guests' needs.  More particularly, Danielle at the front desk and the concierge, Dave, who took our bags, parked the car, secured a guide and generally made our two day stay enjoyable, contributed substantially to this hotel's five star rating.  The hotel is a converted bank building with additional buildings. It is centrally located to shopping and within walking distance of the Titanic exhibit.  The hotel's Grand Room restaurant and its wait-staff are also outstanding.  The restaurant has ceiling friezes which are not to be missed and sumptuous seating spaciously positioned.  But what is really outstanding is the food--at least 4 1/2 star quality.  Because of our schedule, we ate at the restaurant twice for dinner and can attest to its consistent quality.  The venison and lamb were both beautifully prepared as were the crab and scallop appetizers.  Our waitress on the first evening was Renata.  She was particularly helpful in suggesting appropriate wines and her bubbly personality revived us.   Finally, we stayed in the older part of the hotel.  While the room was adequate in terms of furniture and size, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom large, and, most importantly, it was absolutely quiet except for the Albert Memorial bell in the distance announcing the hour.  In sum, a most enjoyable stay and I heartily recommend it to fellow travelers.

Merchant Hotel Is located in central Belfast on the edge of the Cathedral Quarter. It is outstanding in terms of rooms, quality of service and fabulous food. We are locals and went to Merchant for my wife's birthday. Don't expect it to be cheap but if you are prepared to pay for top quality you will get it at this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for the superior double

Stayed here as my Dad had his wedding here. We were a small wedding party, so we dined in the private dining room, off the main restaurant. The service was brilliant, very attentive and the food was divine!! Would definitely recommend the scallops with pea puree and swan profiteroles.
The decor and rooms inside the hotel are so interesting. Exploring the corridors, you can find lots of interesting styles and designs. On arrival, we had a pleasant greeting and a porter took our luggage to our room. We stayed in a victorian style room, which was very comfortable. Only downside is the lighting's quite dim, but not a problem for getting ready as the bathroom light is nice and bright. Shower was brilliant, very powerful and the bath was extremely large! There was a little bit of noise outside in the evening as our room was near the nightclub, but it soon quietened down, (and they provide earplugs!)
Cocktails are very yummy! The bar area is lively in the evening, and very relaxed. After a long night, we were all in need of a good breakfast. It was lovely, a great selection. Eating in the very grand main restaurant with the high ceilings and soft music makes the atmosphere relaxing - a great way to start the day! Staff are very polite and curtious. Happy to hold luggage (and wedding cake) until needed! Spa use was complimentary during stay, but didn't get time to use it unfortunately. Location is great, walking distance to centre and all amenities. Would definitely stay again!!

We stayed for one evening. It exceeded our expectations.

The service was excellent at front desk, the cocktail bar, the great room for afternoon tea and breakfast.

The room was lovely and the bathroom was great. Shower was very powerful and bath was massive.

We used the hot tub on the roof. This was great too; great views over the city.

Excellent hotel, would definitely stay again.

My daughter and I enjoyed the Spring rejuvenate package (even better because Jenny paid) - this included a spa treatment and use of hydrotherapy facilities (fab) , bed and breakfast - exceptional value for money . Every aspect of the experience was 5 star - from check-in to car-parking (good value at £15) to the excellent lunch in the cocktail bar while I comfortably waited for my daughter, to our fabulous! art-deco room to the couldn't be better breakfast. A cocktail is a must before dinner - we then walked across the road (60seconds) and had a lovely informal meal at 2Taps tapas restaurant.
I have to say that the hotel itself is amazing but what makes it most special is the way you are treated by the staff - without exception they were professional, warm and courteous. Whether you are a film star, rich and famous or like us Jo Local out for the night "The Merchant" is a must try - a jewel in our crown!

Room Tip: Room 489 (I think this is right ) was excellent - corner room - lots of windows including a corner f...
