“Top class”
Reviewed 11 December 2012

My wife and I just stayed her, all very last minute and walked in without a reservation, due to the incompetence of another hotel. Front of house couldnt have been more helpful and we stayed in a beautiful art deco room.
I want to thank the reception and concierge team that was on duty on the evening of Friday December 7th & Saturday 8th, you put our weekend back on track and we are very grateful. The room and the service was top class, Mr Wolsey you have developed a super hotel, I hope it will be the first of many stays for our family.

Went to The Merchant Hotel in Belfast for our Christmas party. Never having been in the hotel before but hearing all the comments about it my expectations were very high.

Found the staff at the bar quite rude and when serving us decided to have a conversation among themselves. We were refused by the bar man in the cocktail bar to serve us cocktails because we had no table!! (meaning they could not add a service charge) we had a private room upstairs at the christmas function.

The service of the staff during dinner was very good and very helpful when another table of party goers decided to start throwing food around the room! not what I would expect during dinner in a 5* hotel. Management did however speak with them and this seem to settle them down.

Dinner was "nice" nothing special and on the downside we had to wait almost 45 mins between courses. We were not offered a choice for starter or dessert and only 2 choices for main course I felt this was a bit unreasonable considering the price of £50!!!

The entertainment for the night was a DJ who must have forgotten it was a christmas party because he only played about 4 christmas songs all night and was catering for a much younger age group that was in attendance.

Would I return to this hotel I'm not sure - I might perhaps give it another chance for a more personal dinner before I make a final decision.

Would I recommend it - not for a christmas party!

Me and Mrs spent a nice afternoon here on a weekend trip. we had a couple of very nice and reasonably priced sandwiches and fries and a few drinks on a sun afternoon

We sat in the main bar which was a beautiful room. Service was very friendly but they did forget a couple of things but not a major issue. Also fries came out long after the sandwiches...but I got over it lol.

The head waiter v kindly showed us to the bar next door when we left too which was nice of him!

Main restaurant looked very nice and toilets were very posh!

We were booked for afternoon tea as a present from a relative. We expected the cost to be around £40 for 2 but low and behold we were given a bill for £64 - the reason for the increase was Christmas !!!!

The service was not 5 star - we had to ask for a small Christmas decoration which seemed to be handed out to other tables near us and when our coats were returned we had to ask for our umbrella - hardly 5 star service inspite of the 10% service charge.

I hope residents in the hotel are given better treatment.

We were really looking forward to staying at the merchant hotel for a special occasion, then my husband became very ill & we had to cancel 4 hours due to arrival! The staff at the merchant were so accommodating & we received a credit voucher in the post within 24 hours with the reassurance we could rebook when he was well again. To me this clearly showed a 5 star customer care & dedication to their guests & I would certainly recommend this hotel to others

I am sorry to give a poor review of the Merchant, because the staff were friendly, attentive and attentive. But we had so many problems during our stay.My husband was organising a function at the nearby Courts of Justice. We had invited speakers and guests from Switzerland, one of them almost 80 years old. He was tired after the journey and wanted to check in early.

We arrived with him at 2pm but there was no possibility of checking in early. We wanted to leave at 2.30 for our function but had to wait in the bar until 3pm - not a minute earlier! This meant taking a taxi to the courts, only 10 minutes' walk away, because we were late. Yes, check in is 3pm, but really at nearly all hotels of an international standard, and indeed at many hotels in Belfast, they would have been accommodating.

After our function, we had about 30 people who would have liked to come for dinner with us. The Merchant could not accommodate us except at the set dining times of 6.30 and 9.30. Who on earth wants to dine at 6.30 or 9.30? This was because of their Christmas menus - on 30th November! Most of our guests went to eat elsewhere or went home. We wished to eat at the hotel because our guests were staying there, so had plates of cheese and cold meat in the bar at 7pm and then waited for 9.30 to eat. We were all starving, and it was very galling to notice that at 8pm, when we wished to eat, the dining room was empty! And by the way, the Christmas menu was £55 per head, plus wine. A la carte was basically just a repeat of the Christmas menu. The food was fine - not exceptional, but fine. And the staff were courteous and attentive, one plus point at least. We were really disappointed that we could not have had dinner with all our friends and guests from the function.

We reckon the Merchant lost about £1,000 through not letting us eat at a reasonable time. Not great for a 5* - or any hotel.

And so to bed, to banging music from downstairs until 1am, and revellers in the street walking by, revelling, until the early hours. The bed was very comfortable - so that makes2 plus points! However, the decor was so overpoweringly Victorian it gave me a headache - that and the loud music. Again, not the relaxing oasis you expect in a good hotel.

On to small but annoying points. Our Swiss guests asked for Irish beer in the bar - none to be had, only bottled beer. OK so this was the cocktail bar, but it is the main bar, and the obvious choice if you are staying at the hotel.

One of our guests wanted postcards to send to his wife who had had an accident and couldn't come with him. The hotel has really unusual decor, with its great dome at the entrance - but no postcards.

Speaking of that amazing dome in the entrance hall, we were puzzled on arriving to find that this is not the reception. We had to find our way through corridors and up steps to the actual reception, which is not convenient for elderly or disabled guests, or actually for anybody.

The decor was basically mock Victorian - very kitsch - tasteless Victorian nudes all over the place! It was to me suffocating.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the nightclub and away from the street. Otherwise it will be noisy.
