Owner description: The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

“Different tourist attraction”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Having read the reviews i decided to visit this attraction whilst in Belfast. What i particulary liked was the fact the tour was around an hour long, so didn't eat into too much of your holiday time. At the same time it was really interesting to be able to walk around the gaol and get a feeling of what it must have been like visiting this gaol. You could sense how it must have felt walking through the tunnel from the gaol to the court house or experiencing the last few moments before the hang man's noose went around your neck. It was a very moving experience including seeing the unmarked graves.

Although this was only an hour long, it felt much longer as you got to learn and see so much. Definitely worth seeing whilst in Belfast.

“A must if you like History”
Reviewed 16 August 2014 via mobile

We visited Belfast as a learning tour of the Troubles. Crumlin Road Jail housed Political prisoners and many others. The tour of the jail is funny, thought provoking, shocking and sad. We learned many things that made the trip worth every penny. Our tour was very busy with maybe 30 people on it, so would recommend booking in advance but the tour guide managed us all very well and his comical tone kept everyone entertained. The Jail gives a good account of the history and many cells have been reconstructed to show how life was over the years. There is promise of many more developments within the walls so hopefully will only get bigger and better over the years. Great experience.

“Well worth the visit.”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Went on this tour not really knowing what to expect (I've never visited a prison before!). It lasted about 90 minutes and was fascinating! The guide explained how the prison system worked from a prisoner first arriving, their everyday life, and how a few were subsequently hung. Everything is very well preserved and not at all commercialised.

“Wonderful mixture of humour, history and harrowing tales!”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Our tour guide, Ciaran, lead us on an incredibly interesting, humourous and sometimes harrowing tour. I would certainly recommend this to others visiting. It is a shame more of the gaol is not on show, but what we did see was really interesting.
