“Best Beds on the Island”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We stayed here prior to our round on Royal County Down Golf Links (which by the way is the best links course we both had ever played, including all the Open courses). During our 8 nights in Ireland/N Ireland we stayed at a number of 5 star hotels and none compared to the Slieve when it came to the beds - they were far and away the best beds on the island! Our spa room overlooked the Irish Sea, check in was very quick and hospitable, and breakfast a treat. But the beds are what we will remember the hotel by and why we'll come back!

Dear TravellingTheW0rld31,

Thank you for the great feedback, we are extremely happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay.

We are glad you enjoyed the beds, when one is travelling having a comfortable bed is one of the most important things in a hotel and we have put a lot of research into this and providing a great nights stay.

We are delighted with the feedback as we can inform all departments on how they are performing.

Thank you very much for your time. We hope to welcome you back to the Slieve Donard Hotel in the future.

King regards,

A very large hotel and mainly used by weddings and large parties. This does spoil the ambience a little and clearly the hotel cannot cope with the numbers as breakfast can be overrun.
If the hotel wants to cater for these numbers and claim to be a luxury destination it should have a plan to cope by opening other rooms ( they have enough of them!)
That said our room over the pool was spacious and very nice with a view of the water and mountains. The sun rising in the morning as viewed from the pool or jacuzzi was lovely and very quiet in the morning.
The food was average throughout the hotel but there is plenty of choice nearby.
The spa was superb, rooms good but ambience average.

Room Tip: Choose a resort room for quiet and views of the water and mountains of Mourne

I stayed here weekend 6th to 8th June. Checked in was OK not great girls on reception at 3-10 pm. Would I like a paper in the morning ? Yes! Never arrived and no record of it at reception . Not a big deal however in bar constantly asked like every two mins if we needed anything needed by kids got annoying!Room was two double beds not very romantic for weekend away. Its very expensive to stay here by anyone's standards and I don't think I would go back.

Stayed for a few days at Slieve Donard last week and was impressed by the grandness of the building (Victorian railway hotel). Fabulous location with immediate access to beach and the attractive town of Newcastle. Magnificent view of Mournes from the dining room.

Staff helpful and cheerful generally. Price of drinks highway robbery.

Bedrooms large enough to house a homeless family and the shower cubicle adequate size to bath all the kids in one go. Short folks may need to request a ladder to climb into bed as fitted with very, very deep mattress.

Would recommend this hotel for golfing types with deep pockets.

Room Tip: Rooms at front have interesting views of coastline and town. Top floor very quiet and not for the ve...

If I had the privilege of owning or managing the fabulous Slieve Donard hotel I would be asking WHY 100% client satisfaction or close too is not being achieved. There is obviously problems. With a new manager now installed I was hoping that the problems would be resolved.
I don't care how many courses or years of experience you have within the Hastings a Group. Common sense is required.
Lights not working, toilet seats loose , curtains falling off, broken handles on drawers. Food !!!!!!
Come on folk. Let's make this venue the number 1 in Ireland.

Myself and my partner have stayed at the Slieve Donard before. We love it, the spa is amazing, the staff are lovely (even if they can be a little clingy at breakfast), however the fact that there is no free wifi in the rooms is a little ridiculous, the prices charged are huge. It's so commonplace now that I did feel let down given the cost of the stay. Other than this, however, we loved it.

Stayed here as part of a tour group and enjoyed our stay but one aspect needs serious improvement which is the service on evening meals. We were seated and our order taken within 5 minutes but after that it took 45 minutes for our main course which is very unacceptable considering there were only around 40 - 45 people in the restaurant. Would have given 5 but for the bad evening service.
